This should be quite an interesting experiment. I wonder if this approach will change its market share?

"California-based Sun Microsystems Inc. released its Unix-based operating system Solaris 10 for free Monday, Web Host Industry Review Magazine reports.

Sun is also planning to make the software source code available via an open-source license, Web Host said. The move is designed to boost demand for Sun servers and services, as well as software for the Solaris platform.

While the software is free, Sun will charge subscription fees for support services and programs.

Solaris 10 cost $500 million to develop and includes more than 600 new features, Sun said."

It's a little too late, isn't it?

Users don't care that much about "features" anyway. I think Sun will still lose the OS battle to Linux.

A free piece of software nobody wants to use is still a piece of software nobody wants to use.
