So we all of a sudden have a problem with a name 50 years later?!?

I'm so sick of political correctness and people getting so butt hurt over the simplest things.

Less than .001% of the population are soo offended... The other 99.9 % don't give a $#!&..

How offensive do you think the name the Cowboys is to Native Americans?? The people who slaughtered a majority of the Native American Indians are being celebrated for their massacre...

Give it a rest, nobody is calling people names or being disrespectful. Anybody can find anything offensive. It's just the name of a football team, get over it.

It Represents the Spirit of the Indians in sport....Love it actually!!

Seriously ... the team isn't naming itself after something they hate or is awful ... they are honoring the fighting spirit of the American Indian. It's a compliment, IMHO.

The one thing I have noticed on ATS since I started reading is that there are a lot of members who have little respect for first nations people, and a lot of their posts are racist. Not sure how long I want to stick around here, I guess we'll see. I like a lot of the topics being discussed so that's why I joined up.

I'm used to racism, I've dealt with this all of my life.

Please tell me again, how calling some sports team redskins or a cartoon character is honoring. lol

I think that's all I should say now. Just know that a lot of us natives do not feel honored, and many of us do not care because we have bigger things to deal with life.

Why should one be respected just based on what ethnic group they belong to?

More to the point, why should one be denied respect for the same reason?

And then conversely, how is a team name denying one respect?

You're being told by the First Nations that they consider the term "Redskins" insulting . Where it goes from there defines you...not them.

I find it interesting that people can "quote" a five line OP.

Without even bothering to read it.

Eye opening...

I hate overly PC crap. I think it hurts more than it helps. However, that doesn't change the fact that they have a point.

I for one like the name. I don't find it offensive, but I'm not Native Indian either.

Didnt read the whole post, did ya?

I don't like the name of the team; however, they are a billion dollar+ franchise. They have a certain brand recognition that goes along with their racist name. I totally see the reasoning behind changing the name, but the push to make them give up a world recognized brand, not so much.

I really thought more people actually read the posts here at ATS.

I've just made a huge mistake. I tried thinking about this subject. Let me jot down a few quick thoughts.

We know "Redskins" is offensive because a relatively small number of people say it is. Why can't a large number of people claim the objectors are "over-sensitive?"

If the objection is to using cartoon characters or "derogatory" names, Is everyone fine if the Cleveland Indians start using the Redskins logo?

If some people find a word offensive, does that mean we have to stop using it? Why? Manners? Then how to people continue using "Teabaggers" to refer to Tea Party members? Why do Democrats call Republicans, "Extortionists, suicide bombers, arsonists, traitors, etc?" Surely those are all offensive. but nobody stops using them.

Why is it all right to call some a Homophobe, when there are very few people actually afraid of gays, and the word, technically, means being afraid of the same thing. (I suppose that means that progressives, who want to change things, are homophobes.) See how silly this gets?

Why can't I be called a "Native American?" After all, I was born here. That's what Native means, isn't it?

And First Nations? That's primarily Canadian. Current thought is that a nation has to have a certain territory, borders, that sort of thing. That's one thing the (whatever they're called) certainly didn't have, at least in the US.

Are the "Fighting Irish" not sensitive enough to the indignity that Notre Dame is putting them through?

And what about other college names like the Fighting Scots, Crusaders, Vikings, Tejanos, Saxons, Sweedes, Deacons, Braves, Aztecs, Matadors, Red Men, Dutch, Patriots, Hustlin' Quakers, Saints, Fighting Illini, Preachers, Ragin' Cajuns, and oh, so many more. I can guarantee I could make a case for all of them being offensive.

I don't know. I'm torn between ignoring people who are offended and letting them settle their own issues, and buying a Cleveland cap. (I know, that's mean and possibly offensive, but consider all the people ATSers love who are offensive. George Carlin, anyone? And I dare you to pick any two threads here and not find something offensive.)

P.s. I just noticed the title. "Washington Redskins Must Change Their Offensive Name." Why in the world must they? It's their choice isn't it? There's no law requiring them to, and I hope there never is. And what is meant by "offensive name?" A name that offends somebody? A name that offends 2% of the population? Do we need 10%? 20%? What?

edit on 15-10-2013 by charles1952 because: Add P.s.

Thats a long post for someone who DIDNT READ the entire OP. Lol!

That's right it is downright disgraceful they continue to use the name.

The name stands for everything bad about America.

Everything bad?

I personally get offended ever single time I hear their name.

I almost get sick. I taste throw-up in my mouth just thinking about it.

I don't know why you would get sick and throw up in your mouth, maybe you should stop thinking about it so much. I do see that it is offensive towards those who are Natives or strongly against racism, but it is in my opinion our nations capitols NFL team, honoring Native Americans. What name would be simple, catchy, that they could change it to? I find it odd that the Patriots won the Super Bowl after 9/11, that the NYC teams are the Giants (Sky Scrapers/Twin Towers), and the Jets (What flew into the towers).

Please change the name. I can't take it. It's beyond disrespectful.

You must drop that no good word "Washington" from your name.

Hail to the Redskins...

I did not see that coming! haha
Hook line and sinker.

My ohhhhhh my. What ever happened to reading an OP before spewing your opinion? I think this thread says a lot more about the membership here at ATS now-a-days than it possibly could about the filth that is Washington.

Truly enjoyed the OP and fully agree. It is easy to have pride in being a native. Not so much in being attached to Washington.

Excellent, I love it! (Also kind of funny how many put their knee-jerk responses up without bothering to read or at least to read the whole OP - how often shall we guess so many do so much of the time here. I guess I'll chalk that up to Facebook and Twitter junkies, and the related obsessive focus on themselves attitude. For those who mentioned the Yankees name being/not-being offensive, it it's to me. Not because of the Brits, but because I love to hate the Yankees- especially since they re-signed Girardi instead of him coming back home to the Cubs.
Anyhow, thanks for the LTMS (laughing to myself silently- LOL is a lie 99% of the time.
