Metabolic Cage System

Specifications for a Metabolic Cage System for the Military Nutrition Division include:

1. Capacity to hold 300-850g large rodent.
2. Feeder chamber on outside, yet small enough to prevent sleeping or nesting.
3. Cage components must be made of PC and PMP4.
4. All components must be easily washed and autoclaved.
5. Must provide a perfect separation of feces and urine to prevent contamination from either.
6. Must catch excess food to prevent contamination of urine and feces.
7. A feeding system that does not disturb the animal.
8. Large cover to keep animal securely in cage.

The MATOC is not affected but currently there is no access to Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park.

The primary objective of this solicitation is to issue a new round of Multiple Award Task Order Contracts (MATOC) covering a 5-year period for Highway/Bridge/Road projects in Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, and projects in the surrounding area (within approximately 100 air-miles of any Yellowstone or Grand Teton Park boundary). We plan to award between 4 and 11 Indefinite Delivery, Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) construction contracts; at least one will be reserved for Small Business concerns.

Ah yes. Logistics. Nothing happens without it happening first. (As they say, follow the money trail.)

I mentioned this aspect in some other post, but it's cool to see somebody follow up on it. (Or have a similar line of thought.) By the way you describe some of it, you sound a bit like a supply guy. I wasn't in supply, but this go-between suppy-engineering department which was created to make sure equiment/parts/manuals/etc. were cross-indexed correctly. One aspect was knowing a good deal about how a certain system worked, and then just enough about a part of supply and how their database worked.

Most of the job was boring and fairly mundane. Valves, lightbulbs, watertight door closures, pumps, motors, and the occasional office furniture and supplies. However enough people screwed up ordering stuff in the past or trying to do things in a hurry that there were problems. Which is why the division I had worked in was created. Make sure everything is on the books, indexed, up to date, etc.

The thing about that job was, it seems about 75% of the time you're on standby. You have to be there and ready to provide the assistance at a moment's notice so that when some major part needs to be ordered, you verify everything so it doesn't get screwed up. Pretty much the military equivalent of a customer service help-desk job. But waiting with nothing happening for hours on end is boring boring boring. And often there was little else to do than browse and poke at the information given for you to do your job. Nosing around a bit wasn't looked down upon either, since it was considered as practice in navigating the system. (You start remembering numbers or numbering systems, which speeds up lookups. You can actually get good at it and be many times faster than somebody going into the computer blind. However don't ask, I forgot most of it by now.)

But yeah, there's a lot of interesting and weird stuff. Some parts sound really weird or fancy, but tends to be standard fare electronics. Other things leave you scratching your head wondering what the heck they are. I know guys in the workcenter would kid about trying to order lab monkeys or livestock on a whim (they're indexed), but everything has to be signed off, or in some cases involve a few phone calls to people that know what they're doing, so at least there are checks in the system against false orders or requisitions. (Besides you don't want a DOS type hacking attack where un-needed supplies get sent in bulk to somebody that doesn't need them. That kind of thing ties up manpower and storage space.)

Also I'd suspect some information within the database is purposely falsified. Logistics is important, and to think that any potential adversaries wouldn't know that is foolish. It would only make sense that some is a honeypot for counterintel. (And now with a good part on the internet, curious folks like those following this thread poking and prodding.)

But yeah, weird things, and weird cross-references. Some of the fun stuff as I had mentioned previously is when you find various WWII-era manufacturing divisions that haven't been retired even though the production lines for B-29s, Sherman tanks, liberty ships, or whatever aren't needed anymore. Not sure if there's much to it, but it was one of those things that make you go "Hmmmm...? Just what exactly are they making now?" I know it makes me curious about how they cover the money trail for the black-budget stuff.

Of course it wasn't my job to really delve into those things. Just spare time and being a typical "UFO nerd" (more sceptical now in some regards - too much easy fakery and hype these days), and that was about as close as I could get to looking in the back door without doing anything unauthorized. (In my case I didn't get to see any purchase or order data though, just a parts/materials/equipment/supplier database. And there was a bit of imagination on descriptions or nomenclature, since there were few or no images or tech mans to fill in any details. Part of the fun was coming up with weird names first that sounded like UFO parts or weird experimental equipment, and seeing if they'd actually list via a query or two. Kinda similar if not the same to using "Google-fu" skills. More or less, give your search an educated guess and see what comes up.)

Regardless of my past in how it relates to the topic, cool thread. I have other things to do than try to dig at this kind of stuff which they may not want the public digging at, but I'm still curious as anyone else to see what comes up. I already see there's a few curious items (but much of the bulk order stuff is for padding budgets that would otherwise be cut in the next year), and there's probably a lot more.

Searching on the site you linked, I found this: DARPA-BAA-13-37

It's not weapons related, but it is definitely biological in nature...

It's a req. for something called, "Living Foundries: 1000 Molecules Program", which "seeks to build a scalable, integrated, rapid design prototyping infrastructure" for developing new, advanced chemicals, materials, sensing capabilities, and therapeutics - the primary goal being to 'invent' 1000 (at least) new molecules AND....

.....to develop systems for "improved engineering of biology"...in other words 'biological engineering research'!!

And if you read the whole pdf. (links in a column on the right of page), well...this may be where the rat cages come in
although, considering that those bidding on the contract are instructed to be aware of government policy regarding the 'rights' of human experimental subjects, I think there's a pretty fair chance that this contract for the "Living Foundries...Program" and the one for (inner and outer) security forces at Fort Detrick, are related...
