Well, I woke up this morning and settled down at work, logged in and so far it seems we all have to take on board the following amongst other things:
1.Some of us will be wiped out by nano-technology:
2.Comet Ison has a UFO in its tail, or hold on, is it Nibiru?
3.Zombies are almost certainly coming to get us, cos the FBI are leaking documents to that effect
4. We won't be able to eat fish soon as there will be mass extinctions in the ocean due to acidification.
5.Londoners can expect a visit from Johnny Alien in October 2013, some time.
6.We are all possibly going to die next Wednesday anyway.

I am not being overly serious I know and so do not want to upset anyone, especially the originators of these posts, but I tell you the reason why I am doing this. Earlier today, I was serving a customer in my bookshop, and my friend walked in to say hello. He sat at my desk and saw ATS up on the screen. Once I was free we chatted and he asked about ATS. Now I have known this guy since I was 7 years old, and despite this, I had real problems trying to convince him I was not a nutjob, a conspiracy freak or anything else akin to this.
I tried to explain that I am simply open minded, have reason to doubt the legitimacy of mainstream on occasion, and am eager to learn etc etc. Not sure I convinced them. He would have absolutely freaked at the "Elvis is still alive" thread.
So....... has anyone else had this problem, and if so, how do you explain it away to friends and family that you lurk around ATS!!! It's only "doom porn" in places.
In the meantime, I am going to mainly listen to this, it kinda puts things into a beautiful perspective:

PS: Put it on full screen.

Yeah, there really isn't anything you can say to the uninitiated to convince them you are really very 'normal'.

I have tried to use the entertainment via 'ghost story' analogy which prompts a cocked eyebrow at best.

Are you in Galway by any chance?

Hi, no, that's Puterman country (west of Ireland). I'm in Wexford.
Btw the post is titled like it is cos that's pretty much what he said to me after reading stuff.

depends, you gotta weed through the 95% of bogus threads ,and find the real gold nuggets if you want to convince family and friends of why your looking at conspiracy sites. I managed to convince my overly skeptical brother, that he should not believe mainstream media to much. This was due the recent Syria issue and probable false claim of chemical attack by syria gov.

At least he doesn't ridicule me anymore "where did you get that from ? ATS?"

I don't admit I even know of this place anymore and will deny I am a member if it ever comes up.
They say birds of a feather all flock together.

There are alot of dumb, mentally unstable people here and i would rather not be a bird in their flock.

I like the site....the members are another story.

So the zombies aren't really coming? Damn. I was hoping to try out my new crossbow.

Seriously though, the number of hoaxes and shenanigan laden posts are getting a bit out of hand lately. I like thinking out of the box (see my signature), many posts lately are putting me off. ATS has gone downhill a bit in that regard.

To the OPs that post these types of threads:

Do some homework before you post. Type a synopsis of videos before you post them. Think about the content, try to look at it logically before you compose a thread. Some guy posting a video from mommy's basement is hardly a source. Cross reference things, find multiple sources, from multiple angles.

Just some friendly advice to these posters from someone who has been around for a while

DOOM PORN is a long held tradition at ATS. Failure watch is fun. Join us. It's easy ...
Just go on one of the doom porn threads and 'predict failure' for the doom porn.
Then, when it doesn't happen, you say 'I told you so'.

Don't get me wrong.. I love me some doom porn, but I like it to be at least somewhat realistic and plausible.

Either way, I'm glad we all made it to Wednesday so this conversation could be possible

Whatever makes you feel good about yourself Drums. But you're a little late. As far as the feds are concerned, your membership here makes you a nutjob, just like the rest of us. LOL!

Lol. There was a time when I would lurk ATS and purposely put on a porn site in the background to pull up in case a friend would walk in.

Now with all that has been going on. They come to me asking what's the word...... seems msm isn't telling the whole story.

So as long as the info didn't come from Beck, Alex Jones, Glp, SORCHA FAAL aka source fail or EUTimes...then proper research can commence.

All kidding aside, very few things could surprise me in life at this point. Alien Invasion ? Bring it on. Undead Cannibals ? *Cocks shotgun* that's a scenarion I'm prepped for

I haven't a "Rule Book" here about but | believe the verbage is "Seek and Ye Shall find" and not "Seek, find and then try to convince others"

Thanks for the replies peoples, it's nice to know that others have had that awkward moment when.......
You almost want to give them one, just one book, dvd, or bit of info to open their eyes just a little bit, just enough to hope they will come back for more.
Someone I speak to on occasion via social networking, Thomas Sheridan, is an all round good guy, and he did a short piece on how to wake friends up without losing them.......

Great info.... IMO

People make assumptions and apply meaning based on first impressions unfortunately.

If someone sees you looking at the site whose opinion matters to you show them a really cool thread - one of your favorites. Then say why...
- I like discussing, learning, engaging in the subject.
There are always going to be things outside the norm on news type sites that allow for a free flow of thoughts and ideas.

How I explain it - Nowhere else can I get news more quickly - international. Twitter, reuters...none of it is as comprehesive and has the wide breadth that ATS does.

Why would a normal person be on this site? I was kind of under the impression that we were all a little nutso or at least fringe society in the first place. No? For some reason I am ok with an x military general saying UFOs exist than I am with my sons music teacher saying the same thing. Maybe its just me. Anyway its 50/50 entertainment/ information as far as I am concerned.

'Normal' is highly overrated.

Ah yes. Air on the G String . Has always helped me be calmer. Another is Libera's "Lament" and you also might try Samuel Barbers "Adagio for Strings". I've taken to having an ambient station preset on my radios. Ambient and Drift. That's the way to go.
