I think your original image just wasn't high enough resolution to pick out the details. It is rather anomalous if you don't know the background of the photo. Until I knew it was shot in the 40's I wasn't quite sure what it could be. Exposure times do crazy things in photographs!

It is of course my own theory, anyone could postulate further but it seems pretty self explanatory to me.

LOL I think we missed it because we didn't have the high res pic.

Still, at least it wasn't a fake

Well based on the fact that this photo was taken in the 40's. The exposure time would have been incredibly long for this to have been in color. From my observations, the "object" is identified and is in fact the moon.

The reason for the change in brightness and absolute disappearance in some areas cloud coverage. The line is perfectly straight, and the shape can be clearly seen when the high res image is enlarged. It is a spherical shape and the exposure time would coincide with the the movement of the moon through the night sky.

I think you nailed it

It looks like the picture was taken through a window with a inside light reflecting off the glass. I have seen this in several photos///mainly "UFO" photos.

Ohh it's the moooon... Wow, very good deduction that one - I would never have come to that conclusion, kudos!

PS. Does this mean we can even extract an exact date, ie, 11th or 12th March 1943?
