Lol..! Well at least it doesn't really get cold up here. Usually doesn't go past minus 3/4C. But the wind and the rain certainly makes up for that..! And up here is the only place I have experienced rain that does not just got horizontal but goes upwards too..! Just a few years ago they had a storm hit here and it broke the weather meter at 125mph..!

It is a fantastic place for gazing at the sky. Zero light pollution here its great..! It feels like your under a dome its really quite surreal...

Well I am not sure what the origin of the light source was..

Yes one of our friends took a picture which I think he still has. He is away til friday due to work. So I will get it asap and run it through a photoshop program to see if I can see anything..

I did try taking photos but my compact camera is not good enough..

I am just trying to look for a decent night vision recording device so I can film these sky events... And also one at an affordable price.

It was definitely light that we saw. I do not know how long it was but I am guessing we could see it from source to dissipating as maybe 30/40miles..? And it must have been a good few miles wide... A pretty big thing..

Ooh are you on Lewis or Harris..? If you do not mind me asking..

We do tend to stay up later. We are probably usually the last one of the households to turn the lights off..! I just wonder what these things are we see in the sky..!

Have you ever seen strange lights in the sky...?

I live about 30 miles south of Glasgow near the coast which is a good thing as the sea is only about 3 miles from where I live and you can park the car right close to it and away from the street lights which helps to see the sky better at night.

I do not think I have been down that way before..!

Cool.. Both me and my partner have seen what we call orbs. But really that warrants its on thread..! We did loads of research after we saw the orbs to see if there was anything like it on the interwebz. It was definitely not a natural phenomena. That much was obvious..!

Do you have any idea what it was you saw..? Also the last few weird things I have seen has been when I am with my partner and he sees them too.. There are some who think we are crazy up here.. But there are some who have seen things for themselves...

If there's ever a chance you see that beam again you should shine a laser across it.....since its obviously not an aircraft. Nice post....a real chin scratcher

I lost my last reply when I tried to upload a pic, bit of a delay, anyway...

Had a look at my maps and photos yesterday.

Just to clear a few things up:

We were located slightly lower and left of where you have us marked on your map.

I cannot confirm the beam went down to ground level because we were viewing it from behind a hill in the distance.

We were at approx 290m above sea level - the beam appeared behind a hill approx 2.5km away at 452m above sea level.

The beam looked very similar to those in the spaceweather.com link suggested by astra001uk and similar to some of the links in the comments at the bottom of that page.

Below is a basic map showing 2 red lines, this is the direction in which we saw the beam, it could have originated from anywhere between the red lines and certainly could have been around the Flannan Isles.

Thank you for your reply...

Just a quick thing.. When you say point a laser at it. Does the laser have to be a decent strong one..? And I am looking out for any specific things when shining said laser..? Sorry I am a bit of a noob when it comes to lasers...

Thanks for the pic and no worries about the delay...

Yeah I only put you in a rough point of reference as I wasn't entirely sure whereabouts you were.. Well certainly it seems that we may have seen the same beam of light...! That is so cool...!

And I agree it did look like the pic posted by astra001uk but from where we were looking at it. It was much much bigger than the one in the pic..! Also we could not see the stars through the beam unlike in astra's pic. For lack of a better word the beam seemed 'thick' Was it the same for you..?

Also the beam we saw had another thinner beam beside it. If you were looking due West it would have been on the left side...

As for the unknown source of this beam. It was clear that is was located above cloud level above the sea and I reckon it could be maybe a few miles directly East off the Flannans. We could even see a faint glow through the clouds. But frustratingly the clouds did not clear over that bit... Typical..!

Have you ever seen anything like this before...?

Hello fluff, thanks for sharing this interesting story. It reminds me of the Hessdalen lights in Norway. Have you heard of that? Since its a longstanding and reoccuring mystery, there are quite a lot of pictures as well.

Hi fluff007,
I'm researching stories like this at the moment, where people have seen strange things up in he western isles, and your story sounds really interesting. Is there any way I can message you with my contact details etc on this site, so that we can talk about this? It would be great to hear your story!
Thanks,
Unexplainer014
