Because she rammed her vehicle into a barricade at the White House. Then led them on a high speed chase towards the capital. That footage you saw on video was down by the Capital, after the first incident.

Then, if she was such a threat already, then why leave an opening to the side when they "cornered her" there? Shouldn't the block her avenues of escape off completely. Sounds like only 2 explanations are: either they goofed up, or left it open purposely. This is the capitol of our nation, I guess with sequestration, they had their spike strips repossessed then?

Wasn't sloppy. They neutralized the threat and didn't kill the baby.

Did the police know there was a baby in the car?
Would they fire on a car if they did know a baby was inside?

Either scenario is sloppy IMO

Prolly made it seem like she was giving up. She had stopped the car long enough for the officers to approach it, and more than one. With guns drawn they were able to approach the car and get fairly close. At this point they probably figured she was done and were looking for a way to go hands on. When she backed up and rammed the cop car her next move was forwards, towards two officers standing there. That's when the shots were fired.

They probably saw once they approached the car. Obviously they took that into consideration, or else we'd have a dead child also.

Yes, I understand that. But that does not answer my question. Why leave an opening at all?

It could have been a doll for that matter.

Geeez...

The baby has nothing to do with this.

They probably did not think she could. Especially with the car on that side and two officers standing there.

and what do you know, there was a drill taking place as this happened.....about this VERY SITUATION:

"WASHINGTON (Sept. 30, 2013) -- Emergency vehicles and first responders are once again in action in the National Capital Region and will be thru Oct. 3. They are participating in "Capital Shield 2014."

CS 14 is a joint training exercise in the NCR that is hosted by the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region. It brings federal, state, local and municipal agencies together to realistically test interagency operability during a crisis impacting the District of Columbia, Virginia, and Maryland. It also trains and prepares the Department of Defense to provide defense support to civil authorities and employ appropriate force protection measures as requested. "

Well they probably did see, at least the officer who approached that side. I don't know for sure, but from the sounds of the shot location I believe they knew.

That cop car was hit by something else in pursuit of the black car.

My last comment on this thread...

Listen, IMO, any time anyone fire shots going within feet of a baby or child, it's sloppy, irresponsible, wrong,... Whatever u want to call it. And if anyone does so KNOWING there's a child within feet... That's just completely stupid.

If you don't grasp that, then "helpless" comes to mind.

As if police are mistake free while on duty....

It's a crap situation. You have someone trying to run over two of your partners with a baby in the car. Do you let her keep going after cops or bystanders? It's a situation I wish upon no person.

All I know is that the baby is fine so I can't criticize them too much.

All I have to say is...wtf? What the hell happened? Why did any of this happen in the first place? What's going on?

This is bizarre as all get out!

Not that it matters much, but it was an Infiniti (Q60, possibly?), not a Mercedes.

In response to the general thread. Why is no one questioning why this woman was reported dead at the scene by the MSM, and getting treated at a local hospital by Al Jazeera America? Someone earlier in the thread said they heard that a male had ran from the passenger side of the car when it had stopped? I heard no reports of that. In the video there was clearly no one in the passenger side of the vehicle. But when I was watching it on television, the reporter made a couple of slips about "multiple suspects" then corrected himself to "suspect."

What's the official gunshot count? I've heard 4, 12, 15, 8.. I don't know. I haven't really paid much attention to it since they called off the lock down.

I think that's a matter of logistics.

Let's think about this for a moment, rather than just having all manner of feelings (which, natural as they are, do not actually count for much when faced with the demands reality places upon people in the midst of tricky scenarios like these).

1) there was limited room for further cruisers to gain access, in order to do as you suggest, and totally block the suspect in.

2) the suspect was demonstrably willing to move such blockages to her path, as were placed before her.

3) the incident kicked off quite quickly, and it should not be too hard to figure out that any further response units would have had to have come from quite some distance, since the cars that had shown up were probably responsible for securing an area several city blocks in size, and had been closest to the incident when it began. This takes time. Not much time, but in a situation that fluid, seconds count for an awful lot.

In short, it really doesn't make much difference what the IDEAL response would have been, in terms of the ideal number of cop cars required to totally block the suspects vehicle, because those units were not there. What did make a difference, was that the cops who were responding to the immediate situation had to make a tough call, and actually showed significant restraint not to have opened fire much earlier. You must remember, that they didn't immediately start plugging away at an unarmed female who was minding her own business. They only shot at the car when it became apparent that the driver became a threat, and that's what you would expect, and rightly so.

I am beginning to wonder about the correlation of events in D.C at the moment..

There is a strange sequence of Terrorism happening in the Capital of the United states...

People citizen, just out of the blue doing acts of insanity,

now this a Woman, with a baby going crazy on D.C..

Whether its a random act of madness, or something by design, I find it odd, the correlation here is its premeditated why was the woman trying to ram her car thru the white house gates with a baby? Why did she run from the cops? Why did she have no respect for the baby? In a sense having the child in the car is a emotional response that would create a delay, from eliminating the threat.. Something is strange... Or the child could be used to gain a greater audience..

Either case, these stories in the past couple weeks, in D.C are bizarre...

Something is about to happen.... I mean what next? D.C is a mess...

Its building up... Whether these stories are distractions to keep us from seeing what is about to happen, or whether these actions are somehow connected. This is some crazy stuff..

I woud not mind seeing the biography on the crazy woman in the top story today...

wow I always thought america didnt have round-abouts, well thats what I was told anyhow.... learn something new everyday

We do and I wish in lighter traffic areas they would put more in...keeps things flowing when there is no real reason to stop traffic. That said....

Anyone notice the Keystone Cop moment with the roundabout? As she took not one, not two, but three cop cars around in a circle?

I thought that part was quite funny (absent the whole other part of it).

Why does a man rob a store? Why does a kid touch what he was told not to touch? It isn't that bizarre. Why did a gentleman toss firecrackers over the White House fence a week or two ago? Why did Ray think up the Stay-Puft Marshmallow Man? Answer why, and you will have achieved what philosophers have been searching for over the course of human history.

Its focused madness sport... Not random... Their is a sequence of events here....

I would agree if I was not seeing this...
