Should be made illegal. No different to giving out L Ron Hubbard/Scientology literature to impressionable young minds. It is cult brainwashing.

It's only a book at the end of the day. Surely we can give the kids a little more credit too. Why withold the information when the child can pick up the book, read some, and make an informed descision on what lies within?

Knowledge is knowledge in whatever shape or form. They're not being forced at gunpoint to join the Gideons?

Oh I can see your outrage! Look at the kids in those photos being held at gun point while being threatened if they do not take a Bible!
I think its wonderful that they have the CHOICE to pick up one and take it home IF they want to! Shame more principals aren't doing this.

Exactly! Where are the free Torahs, Qur'ans, Vedas, and Tipitakas (Buddhist holy text) for the students as well? If they are to make an informed decision they should be given all the material to work with right? Not just some preconceived notion that Christianity is automatically the correct religion.

I find this funny actually....where are they you ask? Obviously they never visited the school and asked to leave books, pamplets or what have you....

I mean let us be honest. IF the schools decided to make an area in the school to put ALL this information you listed above without a church or organization having to ask if it were okay and allow the kids access to it if they so choose....people would STILL complain. Even though each religion and belief was available. SOMEONE out there always has to make a stink.

No one forced the children to do anything. Just because YOU don't approve of the bible doesn't give justification to such an Evil response. You made it seem as if the children were literally being forced to take a bible. I believe you exaggerated or "Lied" as we used to call it.

Yeah. They're not supposed to do this. He did say public school.

Harmless as it might be (debatable), still a big no-no.

Most of those books will probably be thrown into a sock drawer or nightstand where they will remain until the kids reach high school and find themselves in want of emergency rolling rolling papers.

Before I even read the location I was guessing it was AR/KY/LA/TX/AL, etc.

For Kentucky, it ranks #47 out of 50 state w/percentage of population 25 years old with a high school diploma or higher in a 2009 study.

en.wikipedia.org...

I'll bet the bibles per capita in the south is 10x anywhere else in the US.

They should be handing out books by Carl Sagan or Neil deGrasse Tyson.

I'm sure if it were the Qu'ran or the Vedas, the shoe would be on the other foot. Distributing religious material in a federally funded public school is against the law, plain and simple. The Constitution is there for a reason folks, to be followed.

Now tell me, how would you all feel if a group of practicing Muslims came to your school and started offering Qu'rans to your children? Would you be ok with it or would you be crying foul? It goes both ways.

It's optional, so why the outrage, over react much ?
Even the kids that take one they will probably just throw it in there room and go play video games, or give it to there parents.

In all honesty, I wouldn't mind. I think it could be educational for a child to learn others beliefs and what makes this crazy world tick. Just because the information is there for a child to read, does not mean that their religion is being forced on anyone.
You all say that putting information out there in case a child DOES want to read it is forcing it down their throats...but really keeping information from a child isn't any better now is it?
I remember learning about other religions and beliefs in school. I don't think I turned out bad. I think it helped mold me into a open-minded and less judgmental person.
This world is a rainbow of different kinds of people. I don't think we should discriminate against religion any more than we should the color of our skin.
I love God, I believe Jesus died on the cross for my sins, and I say Merry Christmas...but I am not offended if someone wishes me "Happy Hannukkah", "Happy Holidays" or any other term that corresponds to their religion. I feel blessed that they took their time to wish good will to me. Because that really is all it is. Its like someone saying "Have a great day" in French...its just another way to wish someone good will.

I would guess your not a member of the Freedom From Religion Foundation? Join them and make a complaint, they will put an end to it.
Before anybody gets all bent out of shape, I have no problem with any religion but there is a place and time for that and school is not one of them. If your going to allow free Christian bibles it's only fair to also offer all the rest including Agnostic and Atheists viewpoints.

I agree with this except we do not know if such groups even offered or were denied. If those two points did occur, I wholeheartedly agree that the situation then become different. Still have very little to go on save the pictures and someones account (and while I can give some benefit of the doubt, I take what they say with a grain of salt and hearty dose of skepticism for lack of any other reports.)

Outraged for allowing students to take a bible if they want. No forcing going on here it seems.

Outraged is perhaps the wrong word. Actually, i don't know a word for this?

If they had given out Korans i could only imagine the response this
would get, either way its a shame, those books are both sick and
twisted with morality that's highly questionable at best and at worst
flat out twisted and sick.

Preconceived? Not at all....It IS the correct religion....

So says the lord.....Not a prophet, not a monk, not a child, not a fat butt, not anything other than the lord....

So, yeah, it is the correct religion....

Nuh-uh, actually I just read in the Quran the Lord says Islam is the right religion...

But wait, I remember the Lord also saying Judaism was the right religion...

Also, he DID say Hinduism was the right religion when I was reading those scriptures...

It's almost like the Lord says EVERY religion that has a 'lord' in it is the right religion, in those scriptures...

Confusing stuff

Force religion down throats? Oh you mean like atheism is forced down our throats through crap like "Evolution"? Which isn't even real science its a belief system which leads a person into atheism. Its in school, on TV, and any creation scienteist who opposes your atheist Evolution religion is shut down, shut up, and fired from their job.

I really don't get why this upsets people so much. If kids are learning at home nothing can override that. My own son was told in school that evolution and the bible are contradictory - and the teacher went on to show proof of how evolution is right. The teacher clearly has issues around this, and it's strange he approached evolution like this but whatever...

i didn't get upset by it in the least. He can think on his own and I know that in living in the real world this won't be his last contact with comments on religion - for or against. In fact, I would rather hear his thoughts on it when he is young.

Because religion is a huge part of this world I actually can't imagine how it could be wiped clean from our children's exposure. What surprises me is one school allows stuff like my sons science teacher comparing evolution to biblical explanations while another won't allow a Christmas song to include any overtones of Jesus (lambs etc). I mean Christmas is about Jesus so what are they even celebrating it for it won't allow a song that refers to the purpose?

How about we get rid of extremes on either end and stop being so threatened by someone brain washing our kids. Trust we are their greatest teachers, and because they don't live in a bubble it might actually be good for them to have a little exposure while our influence is still strong. When people feel threatened by stuff like this I think of those who are equally extreme on their views, and resort to acts like terrorism.

Lets teach children while young to tolerate rather than trying to shelter them. Or just kick God out of everything for as long as possible. It's only one of the oldest, and most read book in the world; impactful on a level so grand we cannot deny it has influenced just about every decision the collective makes - including not wanting it in the schools.

Looks like your ignorant hate against religious is showing just a tad wee bit. :: rolls eyes :: I have no problem with any religious denomination (and that includes a religion I do not care for one bit, Islam) to give out their religious books. As long as it's 100% voluntary.

So deny ignorance and move on with your life.

Don't expect to be able to talk out of both sides of your mouth on ATS and not get called out for it.

First you blast the OP's ignorant hate for religion - which is absurd, because there was nothing ignorant or hateful in her post. Then you go on to say that you have no problems with any religious denomination, and then go on to say 'that includes a religion I do not care for.'

What nonsensical doublespeak!

Looks like your ignorant hate for brown people who worship God in a different way than you is showing.
