Now that the war in Iraq is officially over and the one in Afghanistan winding down, the Department of Defense found itself facing a conundrum. It had just spent billions of dollars buying heavily armored personnel carriers designed to stand up to insurgent attacks only to find that it had run out of wars to use them in.

The initial plan was to shove the vehicles, called MRAPS (Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected) into a warehouse and let them collect dust. That changed when someone decided that, having served so admirably overseas, it would be only just to bring the MRAPs stateside and deploy them in the domestic war on crime.

And so, for the past couple of months, news reports have been popping up announcing that places like Murfreesboro, T

No big deal. The police have been militarized for a while now. Also MRAPs aren't as mine resistant as they'd like to make you think. Simple fix, make a bigger IED. If the concussion doesn't kill you getting thrown about the cabin as the vehicle is thrown onto it's back may.

Ok I am going to reply, I have stayed out of the Mraps or whatever they are called vehicle threads of which there are dozens right now, but this makes sense to me. So that said, it does appear GOV is expecting civil unrest, the police are going to be the first ones out to control crowds and protect innocents.

What I want to understand is why on earth do we have, have we seen so many, so so many traumatic head injuries return from wars in the past 10 years if these are so protective? I recall reading about the Military begging fro protective vehicles and not getting them, so where did all these come from all the sudden? And how did theses armored vehicles help reduce the traumatic brain injuries?

Here is the area where William Cooper was murdered by LEO's...

COTTONWOOD -- Cottonwood Police recently acquired three 2009 military surplus HMMWV (Humvee) vehicles. The military Defense Reutilization and Marketing Offices Program grants excess equipment to municipalities and law enforcement agencies around the country.

Cottonwood Police was able to acquire these vehicles free of charge. The vehicles amounted to approximately $126,000 worth of equipment to be used for the city's benefit. They are nearly new. The highest mileage is 950 miles.

Two of the vehicles will be primarily used to supplement the Verde Valley Regional S.W.A.T. team. The third vehicle may be used search and rescue missions and similar needs.

The vehicles are distributed to law enforcement and public service agencies since they contain light armor and cannot be released to the general public. If otherwise unclaimed, the vehicles would be sent out for dismantle and destruction.

The sheriff's office is touting it as a tool that will help them better serve warrants.

So, they are going to use this behemoth, that probably gets 10 gallons to the mile, to tool around town serving warrants? no wonder the country is bankrupt.
I fully expect that they will start giving obsolete F-16`s to the animal control people in Texas.

So they got a free vehicle instead of buying a new one? Are we just pretending that the police have not had armored vehicles like the Bearcat for over 3 decades now? Considering that the cop on the street is more and more facing much better armed crimminal with body armor would it not be stupid to not have something armored to respond with? In other news securty companies have thousands of armored cars with armed men inside. Far more then the police. Why not freak out about them instead?

"Not some Mohammed off in the desert some where"

Your lack of knowledge of the people and situation you are mocking with such great disdain is appalling. I'm amazed you opted to go straight for their Prophet, which I'll wager you know nothing about, rather than simply go for the racial epithets. That shows real insensitivity and hatred. Good job.

If you are a representative of what WE THE PEOPLE have become, then we deserve no better than what we are receiving.

Congratulations on being so well briefed on the situation.

Perhaps this was merely posted in an attempt to show people to what lows the situation has gone to?

That our own hired civil SERVANTS are now armed like some military company? That they are using tactics against us that are not at all unlike the tactics that are used in foreign hot zones? That they, the HIRED civil SERVANTS, who serve at OUR PLEASURE are adopting an attitude that civilians are the enemy?

Oh, ok. You're right. Nothing to see here. Move along citizen.

Hell, it's looking like the F-35 is going to make show stoppers like the A-10 obsolete as well. Let's deploy those in rural Texas. I hear the feral swine have become rather tank-like in their appearance and swagger. I wager one passover with a single A-10 will take out the rut. Perhaps an entire squadron will drive the point even further home!

Actually Mohammed is very popular name among Muslims. Why do you think he was talking about the Prophet?

You've misinterpreted me, it was sarcasm as in how the media acts and perpetuates the lie of a terrorist threat to the American populace. Not an apology, a clarification. Good job reading something into nothing.

Try not to be so narrow next time, it's an internet forum.

While I am certainly no fan of a militarized police force, I'm not too alarmed by an MRAP or hummer acquisition. These are primarily defensive tools. If they started acquiring Bradley's or Abrams then I'd be more concerned. Besides, if the shtf, a few MRAPS aren't going to be my concern. I'm more worried about the armored battalions at Ft Hood and elsewhere throughout the state.

Do tell how the criminals of today are better armed than they were say 30 years or even 60 years ago for that matter? The real truth of the matter is that they are not, in fact they are far less armed today than they were 60 years ago.

You will have a hard time today finding a criminal with an automatic weapon at their disposal, but 60 years ago it was common place. Funny how the police forces back then didn't need tanks to take on the criminal element that was far better equipped than the wanna be criminals of today.

I agree.

You don't hear about gangsters with tommy guns firing hundreds of round anymore. Those days are long gone. You rarely even hear of criminals using semi-auto rifles much less machine guns. Bonnie and Clyde would tear up the average street punk today.
