That 30-minute session was the highest-level official meeting between the United States and Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the taking of American hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran that ushered in a more than three-decade estrangement between the two nations.

What could this mean? Just recently if you recall, Rouhani put an end to Ahmadinjeds public denial of the holocaust (rightfully so). It seems to me the Iranian authorities are getting desperate and looking at alternative routes to get them out the mess they are in. I have family in Iran and I know for a fact that the sanctions have had a considerable impact on Iran's economy. Food prices have skyrocketed, the exchange rate has gone through the roof, and no one is buying our oil . People are still able to manage however.
We will have to wait and see how the political atmosphere unfolds within the next couple weeks to have an understanding of what happened in this meeting.

Not sure how good your media is, but talks were planned between Kerry and his Iranian opposite for this week and I don't see how this is in anyway secret? FYI, this was discussed on the UK BBC Newsnight programme this week as due to happen - maybe this meeting isn't the one they alluded to for all I know, but it does show that discussions - formal or informal - were planned. Actually, just found a link to this 'secret meeting'...

www.bbc.co.uk...

ETA, that holocaust denial - denial? it turns out he actually did not mention the word holocaust, that was a mistranslation. He did talk about 'any crimes committed by the Nazis on Jewish and non Jewish people'.

Rouhani and Obama had a phone call conversation and they hoped for the further future talks to help solve the complicated issues between the two nations...I think this is a very positive step towards a better diplomatic relations in the future...This will be good for Iran and the US and it equally benefits the people of both great nations, and hopefully helps to establish peace throughout the whole region...It is true that Iran needs America, but it is also true that America needs Iran as much,if not more.

I think a lot of this has to do with Syria. Iran saw how quickly Russia sold out Assad weapons program and gave it away while at they same doing nothing risk its growing ties with the West. I think it is very clear to Iran the Syria is not going to be of any help, the opposite in fact and the Russians will not defend them beyond talk. If your Iran you might as well make a deal for yourself and get something in return instead of having the Russias give it away later if it looks like it will cost them some money.

So you think that Syria believed Russia could stop the US from straight
up invasion? I dont believe that. Russia gave to Syria what it couldnt
get for itself. A brokered deal with the UN with its interests protected
by a member nation with vito powers.

Your staetment sounds like pure haterism and/or missleading.

Syria couldn't have hoped for a better outcome thanks yo Putin.

Thank you Putin!

Hardly secret

www.bbc.co.uk...

But it does seem that maybe Obama learnt from Thatcher - and recognises in Rouhani "someone we can do business with". Bodes well

Your Sadly wrong about that part.

Iran saw how quickly Russia sold out Assad weapons program and gave it away while at they same doing nothing risk its growing ties with the West.

What? yet the American Government, the Gulf regimes having being arming these Friendly, heart warming, kitten rebels since the earliest start of the conflict.

If your Iran you might as well make a deal for yourself and get something in return instead of having the Russias give it away later if it looks like it will cost them some money.

Seriously?

Lets all just pretend Putin save Obama from nearly starting a global conflict in which the American government would never recovery from, otherwise this phone call with Iran wouldn't happen.

Could this just be the phone call to confirm the instructions when to start "plan B"?

Probably the biggest thing they worked out was the Tehran to the US flights being resumed after a coupla decades hiatus. The rest was all gossip and "youre so special!" " NOOOooooo YOURE so special!!" Im not special... YOURE special!!" "NoNONO.. YOURE special".... ad infinitum.
