That 30-minute session was the highest-level official meeting between the United States and Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution and the taking of American hostages at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran that ushered in a more than three-decade estrangement between the two nations.

Secret meeting between Iran and U.S takes place
What could this mean? Just recently if you recall, Rouhani put an end to Ahmadinjeds public denial of the holocaust (rightfully so). It seems to me the Iranian authorities are getting desperate and looking at alternative routes to get them out the mess they are in. I have family in Iran and I know for a fact that the sanctions have had a considerable impact on Iran's economy. Food prices have skyrocketed, the exchange rate has gone through the roof, and no one is buying our oil . People are still able to manage however.
We will have to wait and see how the political atmosphere unfolds within the next couple weeks to have an understanding of what happened in this meeting.

I think a lot of this has to do with Syria. Iran saw how quickly Russia sold out Assad weapons program and gave it away while at they same doing nothing risk its growing ties with the West. I think it is very clear to Iran the Syria is not going to be of any help, the opposite in fact and the Russians will not defend them beyond talk. If your Iran you might as well make a deal for yourself and get something in return instead of having the Russias give it away later if it looks like it will cost them some money.
