6 Reasons (+2) to NOT Send Your Daughter to College

A Catholic website, called Fix the Family, by Raylan Alleman, is urging Catholic families NOT to let their daughters go to college in order to save them and their parents from sin, listing 6 (+2) reasons why.

www.fixthefamily.com...

1 She will attract the wrong types of men
Lazy young men will capitalize on a young women with ambition, and look to them as the sole supporter, seeking only to supplement the family income.

2 She will be in a near occasion of sin.
She'll be tempted and confused by secular influences and runs the risk of falling in love and being overtaken by her hormones, losing her purity.

3 She will not learn to be a wife and mother.
Career training is a masculine roll and will conflict with a woman's role to be a mother and homemaker, skills that aren't taught in college.

4 The cost of a degree is becoming more difficult to recoup.
Couples that are strapped with the debt of student loans will put off having children! She'll probably never get a job that pays well enough to recoup the cost of tuition anyway!

5 You don’t have to prove anything to the world.
Women, know your place and stay there, you don't have to prove that your smart. Parents, you don't have to impress society that you did a good job raising your daughter with a college degree.

6 It could be a near occasion of sin for the parents
Parents might not have as many children if they feel that they have to save money for each of their children to attend college. Don't lock your girls into a career, just make sure they find good husbands.

7 She will regret it.
Women will regret passing up having more children or neglecting the ones they have. Ultimately, they won't feel fulfilled in their careers, anyway.

8 It could interfere with a religious vocation.
"To the nunnery, Ophelia!"

Of course, Mr. Alleman has anticipated and prepared arguments for those who oppose his Catholic stance on college education for Catholic women.

1 You don’t believe in educating women.

So the real reason girls go to college is for a degree, not an education. I strongly believe girls and women should be educated, first and foremost in the Catholic faith. If we look COMPREHENSIVELY at the Catholic doctrine, we’ll see very little that promotes a woman working outside the home.

2 You believe in oppressing women.

Actually, since the purpose of a college degree is for a job, it becomes unnecessary for our daughters to have such a credential. My personal impression is that the day-to-day grind of a job is below the dignity of women. In a way, it is like being a hired hand, as result of the fall and the penalty for original sin. Of course the Lord and the Popes have raised the dignity of work as a way of husbands living out their vocation and duty. But the penalty for the woman as a result of the fall was pain in childbirth (which requires having babies), not to work. Sending our wives out to work should be a very last resort, a misfortune, so it shouldn’t be part of a plan for young ladies before they even get a start at family life. Keeping a home, being a loving wife, and being a nurturing mother are of immeasurable dignity to a woman and not something to be farmed out to servants.

3 You believe in taking away opportunities for women and trapping them into a subservient role.

Getting a college degree often makes a young lady feel an “obligation” to use it, to make money. Often her husband doesn't want to see it go to “waste.” So the degree is what actually traps her. Not having a degree frees her to enter into a marriage with proper roles in which her husband will provide for her and their children.

4 God calls women to use their talents.

Generally women will marry and have children so are gifted by God with the natural abilities to nurture (feed and raise) as well as educate children.

5 A woman needs to have something to provide income in case her husband dies, becomes disabled or leaves her.

The first 2 issues can and should be resolved with insurance, which is very affordable for young couples who may be vulnerable to these VERY remote possibilities, which is why it is so affordable. A responsible family will have such coverage in place. As for the husband leaving her, the possibility of being left in such a state would make a woman MUCH more careful about the man she decides to marry.

FATHER"S LOCK UP YOUR DAUGHTERS!

Is there a Catholic Taliban? Because this guy could be their spokesman!

Don't let your women play sports or participate in dance! Have you seen the postures that sport and dance present! And their sports and dance clothing are too revealing!

Put your daughters in a perpetual state of physical vulnerability! Keep women oppressed, keep them isolated, cover them up, keep them depending on their fathers and husbands, don't let them have their own money, and for God's sake, don't teach them about stuff their men don't understand.

What a sack of misogynistic garbage!

I remember when I was in college, and telling my father about how a photon can collide with an electron, knocking it out of it's atomic orbit, creating a radio wave that goes off in two directions! He blurted out "My God, you'll never find a husband if you keep talking like that!

So what's a girl to do? Work at McDonald's until she meets Mr. Right? Will Mr. Right really be attracted to a good girl with no education or ambition?

LMFAO

Well, Freedom of Speech does cover stupidity. Instead of getting all upset maybe you should just laugh it off instead?

Maybe it is me but i find it hard to take this seriously even if that was the intention. Especially since women now make up over 50% of the college population, so maybe the real attention should be given to why fewer men are taking advantage of a higher education.

Stupid men can't keep intelligent women for very long.

It's true that family values have changed in the last 20-30 years and I agree there are positive adjustements to be made but supressing women isn't positive in my opinion.

Before, men used to bring the only income for a family of 8 and now, even with both parents working, some have a hard time to keep up.

This is a society problem, a problem of over consuption, a problem of corporative abusing, a problem of housing cost, the list goes on and on...

Well, I've never... I can't... I just can't -- the sheer ignorance. I'll never understand the mindsets of some
people -- NEVER. That's ludicrous! Ah well, to each their own I suppose. I just hope no one will actually follow and believe that.

Dude, its America. People say stupid things all the time and Catholicism has always held that attitude about women. Just take a look at their recent statements about birth control or the disturbing lack of women in the Catholic Priesthood.

Face it, just about every major world religion has female subjugation built in. So i imagine that any intelligent girl who wants to go to college can and will do so regardless of what her Father says. It is one of the virtues of growing up and moving on to College.

Just wanted to say that if I was dating you, that wouldn't prevent me from proposing. I enjoy dating intelligent women. They are easier to talk to, you don't have to dumb things down to them and can help push you in your own pursuits of knowledge. Nothing is more irritating then a vacuous girl who only cares about her looks and becomes worthless after she hits 30 and starts to noticeably age.

This website is a shining example of how Catholic doctrine is completely behind the times. I'm so glad I dropped my connections to it. Of course Catholicism being the arrogant religion that it is, doesn't recognize that fact and just calls me a non-practicing Catholic.

He means this...

Source

Women are attending and obtaining degrees from U.S. colleges and universities at a pace exceeding that of men. In concordance with the burgeoning women’s rights movement that exploded in the 1960s and 1970s and provided a plethora of new opportunities for advancement, this trend has translated into ever-increasing college enrollment for women.

On some co-ed campuses, the girls outnumber the boys by a ratio of almost three-to-one – an astounding figure.

First, the stark numbers.

According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), between 1999 and 2009, overall college enrollment increased by 38 percent, from 14.8 million to 20.4 million. But, over that time span, the number of enrolled females climbed by 40 percent, versus 35 percent for men.

So yea, who gives a damn what a couple of Catholic jackasses have to say about women. They cling to ancient ideals generated to keep women in their place and subservient to a man's desires.

Women don't buy that # like they used to because they no longer have to do so.

As for addressing the men in college issue. Well maybe they should start telling guys that there is a 3 to 1 ratio of women to men in college and that can only increase their chances of getting lucky?

Just a few steps short of requiring women to wear burkas and return to pre-civilization roles.

I love how the same people who try to bash Christians/conservatives as woman haters and the war on women for silly things like this completely ignore the middle east and Islam where woman are truly treated as less than equal and abused/killed regularly. Give me a break.

There are tons of Catholic colleges to go to. So I guess it's no longer safe to send your daughter to one of those?

My sister is currently attending a Benedictine college, and she seems relatively safe there. It's co-ed too!

The thought of locking up your daughter seems to be more of an evangelical view.

"People who try to bash Christians/conservatives" are trying to combat the abuse of women in the middle eastern cultures too! Just because we westerners reject oppressive rhetoric when we hear it, that doesn't mean that we don't care about and condemn the abuse laid on other women in far off lands too.

If you really want to make a statement against the beliefs offered on this website then simply forward it to the Pope. He seems like a good guy, who knows, maybe he will use it as a means of rallying women around the Catholic church by denouncing the notion that women should just be "uneducated baby makers."

He is, after all, from Venezuela. Ever heard of Carnival?
If any Pope is going to start praising the majesty and beauty of women it will be him. You could actually do some good for Catholicism and the world in general, he might even give you a personal call to chat about it.
