I can't create new threads as I have less than 20 posts, so I'll have to put it here and hope that the staff see my post.
I don't normally browse ATS from my PC, I'd say about 98 % of my browsing is done from my phone either while in transit or after getting into bed -
these are the only times that my brain is truly free for some out of the box thinking. I don't log on, as I don't feel the need to reply. I'd rather
keep my low post count than add one-liners to every second thread. Even though I may only have a handful of posts to my name and don't log on, I do
spend a considerable amount of time on the site - one to three hours per day.
I first started browsing ATS circa 2009, but didn't register for about two years after that as I didn't feel the need to do so. Shortly after I
joined, the site theme changed but without really throwing a spanner in the works. When I heard about the upcoming change I didn't feel the need to
check it out, especially considering I'm hardly ever logged on. Oh how wrong I was...
24 hours ago I opened ATS and was forced to use the new layout. As I said, I browse from my phone. I do so using Opera Mobile, but the new layout
makes the site almost completely unusable. When the browser's agent is set to mobile, zooming in and out is disabled, meaning I only have a few
sentences on the screen at any given time. It feels like every dozen words I have to scroll, and I don't have a tiny screen (Samsung Galaxy S2).
Swapping to the desktop agent doesn't fix things, as the browser's text wrapper doesn't work with the new site and I am left with an inordinate amount
of horizontal scrolling as well as a semi-broken menu occupying the top third of the screen. With the old site I could zoom out a fair bit and
sometimes get several entire posts showing on screen without the need for ANY scrolling.
My next big gripe is the HUGE gap between posts. There is a massive block with the poster's name above a post and a considerable gap of empty space
below the post. This white space less-is-more doesn't work for me. I like my content delivered in an efficient way, not a hipster trendy way.
What happened to the COLOUR? The site feels so drab that it's depressing. The theme as well - this is supposed to be an adult forum with mature topics
being discussed, not a social network for adolescents. The immature, childish theme does NOT suit the serious discussions at hand.
What happened to the strip alongside blocks of text that pointed out whether the content was a quoted post of off-site content? If I put my phone down
for a few minutes or swap tabs to continue reading another thread I'd like to be able to see at a glance what the content I'm reading is supposed to
be. Those labels were very much appreciated.
I am one of several that maintain and run one of the biggest classifieds forums in Africa, and we made the choice to disable nested quotes to free up
resources on the server and keep post lengths down. Great idea there, bad idea here. If I quote someone that posted two pages back, and he quoted
three people with posts spread over ten pages, it can be INCREDIBLY difficult to keep track of what's being said. The conversation here is far too
intellectual to assume that everyone can keep track of nested quotes without actually being able to see them.
In closing, ATS as it stands (back on the old theme) is one of my favourite pass-times, but you're killing it for me. It's so frustrating to browse
that I would rather find news elsewhere, or another site that is more intuitive and efficient to use. It's almost as if TPTB have gained control of
the site and want to dumb us down further by giving us plenty of white space to distract us from the content.
Please, I'm BEGGING you. Please leave the old layout as an option. Even if the URLs have to be different, they can share one database and therefore
have the exact same content.
I'm willing to pay a monthly subscription fee to have the old site back for good!edit
