Mods, I didn't know where to put this. Please move to appropriate forum. Thanks.

This is a breaking story and there is not too many news sources out there that are reporting on this.

TRIPOLI: An armed group hijacked a Royal Jordanian Airlines plane in Libyan capital Tripoli on Monday.

According to foreign media reports flight, scheduled to take off for Amman, was hijacked in Tripoli International Airport.

The Libyan or Jordanian authorities have not made an announcement in this regard as yet.

It's not really a hijacking if the plane is still on the ground. It was taken over, but it wasn't hijacked.

I'm actually surprised that this hasn't happened more in that region with all the unrest. That seems to be the last region where you can hijack or take over planes anymore.

Looks like it happened not even an hour ago and so there is no word yet from the airport regarding passengers, etc.

Will keep looking for any other news. Thanks OP!

This is very interesting ,to see if there is a connection between this and the 898 Canadian flight to Heathrow.

After all, I think they were onto something but they didn't exactly knew what ,therefore they arbitrary took 898 as hijacked.

According to the sources I have been able to find, the airport in Tripoli was shut down on Sunday because of armed groups "besieging" the airport and flights were transferred and being conducted out of Mitiga International Airport.

Could be they are trying to steal a plane?

898 was most likely a simple transponder error. They went for another code, and put in 7500 instead. You don't throw up a 7500 and then continue on like nothing is wrong like that. If they missed a frequency change they may have been going for 7600 and just missed. It doesn't happen often with a 7500, but wrong codes do happen quite often.

Agreed with that ,but still no words from the authorities, which means it doesn't worth it,or they were doing live exercise to see if any response, from a possible threat.

Well there are still missing ex Lybian officials. Maybe they're making a run for it. Another wait and see. S&f. Thanks.

Now that wouldn't surprise me. It looks like it's an E190 operating as RJ543. It shows departing Queen Alia International at 1235, and arriving in Tripoli at 1511. It departed five hours late from Queen Alia, but the only other flight is an A321 operating as RJ542, that's halfway back to Amman at 33,000 feet.

Why would there be word though? If it was a simple pilot error like that, which happens all the time (not the 7500, just the missed code/frequency change/etc), there is no reason for them to hold a press conference to announce it, or even release it through twitter.

RJ denies its aircrafts seized in Tripoli

Not sure why the runway was closed but the plane wasn't highjacked.

You don't just suddenly become concerned and close a runway though. That doesn't make sense, and is a lousy excuse.

I just saw a news flash on cnn that 49 inmates broke out of a Tunisian prison as well, and Tunisia is right beside Libya. Maybe they made it to Libya, hijacked the plane to go fight in Syria. Just a thought.

Then is pure coincidence, but we shall see in the coming hours if any false alarms will take place or not.

A flight to London got out over the Atlantic and according to a twitter post switched their transponder to 7500 which is the hijacking alarm code. It then was supposedly switched to the military intercept code, but it continued on across the Atlantic and landed in London with no problems, and normal codes.
