Walking shark discovered

A new species of shark has been discovered in Indonesia that "walks" along the seafloor looking for prey. The Bamboo Shark pushes itself along the seafloor using its fins as tiny legs, eating small fish and crustaceans. The shark only grows to a little over two feet long, and is related to the longtail carpet shark, which grows to about four feet.

A new species of shark that "walks" along the seabed using its fins as tiny legs has been discovered in eastern Indonesia, an environmental group said Friday.

The brown and white bamboo shark pushes itself along the ocean floor as it forages for small fish and crustaceans at night, said Conservation International, whose scientists were involved in its discovery.

The shark, which grows to a maximum length of just 80 centimetres (30 inches) and is harmless to humans, was discovered off Halmahera, one of the Maluku Islands that lie west of New Guinea.

Bamboo sharks, also known as longtail carpet sharks, are relatively small compared to their larger cousins, with the largest adult reaching only about 120 centimetres (47 inches) in length.

That's pretty cool though, its amazing how little we know about whats in the worlds oceans sometimes it seems we know more about space.

Just one more reason I'm thankful for evolution not taking place in real time.

Hopefully our great grand-kids will have shark repellent by the time these sharks are hiding in the bushes at Central Park.

Absolutely fascinating - and horrifying. Just when I thought it was safe to go back in the water and now they’re on land!
Thanks for sharing - I really enjoy this kind of thing.

That being said? I have to admit I was thinking of this when I read the headline!
