Sorry, I thought you meant people in general, not TV shows... I admit that TV shows & MOVIES were very influential... I can't name any but an embrace and a snog or 2 was common in pre-WW2 film... 'Ginger Rogers' (pun intended?) certainly had some hot moves... A bit before my time but I have blurry memories of watching loads of DANCING GIRLS in musicals watched on my Grandmas Black & White TV from the age of 4 till about 8, every Saturday (after she'd let me watch the wrestling)... I'm in no way defending underage sex and think 16 is about right - it's just a rule trying to fight a natural urge and peer pressure so it's never going to have much effect - and kids banging at five is something straight out of the Roman Catholic Book of Paedoism, BUT in the 'good old days' of puritanical Christendom arranged / forced marriages at PUBERTY / 12ish were as common among the rich as they were among the poor... It took SECULARISM to bring in the age of consent in just about every country - the church did not rule on this issue.

That was precisely my point... In the '50s they went apesh*t over Elvis not just because of him but what they predicted it meant to entertainment. I'm not saying this judgmentally, just stating an historic fact. If the intent is to shock, then as time passes it takes more to get a rise out of the audience. The latest VMA show is part of the logical progression.
