for some reason we here in the us and probably most countries other than japan we act as though there's some enormous coffee filter keeping back all the radioactive waste posing no threat to anyone except japan.. it's the only thing i can think of that allows any discussion about the topic without completely freaking out.

this is horrifying and doesn't seem like anyone is doing anything, not that there's actually anything anyone can do but still.. it just seems like everyone is approaching the issue so lackadaisical. anyway.. we're screwed. so i guess that's probably a reason?

Japan is using the "dilute" theory probably only reason for this is there is really nothing else they can do. Robots can't get close to the fuel rods to pick them up as they get fried and breakdown when they get too close? The Japanese lead the world it seems in the robot world yet they can't get inside the reactors without them going bust. This doesn't sound good and true, no one seems to talking about it. Strange.
I've always said, where are the "aliens"? Why don't they come out of the closet and use their advanced technologies to "fix" it? Could be that the probable is NOT that bad after all. Perhaps diluting the radioactive slurry is all that is needed. Time will tell.

I suppose that then begs the question, who is conducting the experiment?

We are... the world. The problem is that TEPCO is in charge of it.

TEPCO built a nuclear plant based on a poor design atop a megathrust zone to lower-than-indicated standards and without considering all the effects of a tectonic event, stored fuel rods improperly, and when the plant had damage, spent precious time following some ridiculous company protocol rather than allowing workers to handle the situation and spent more time trying to clean their reputation than trying to clean up the plants afterward.

In simpler terms, this is an experiment not just in what can happen if a nuclear plant fails under the circumstances that surround Fukushima, but also in what a company can do wrong in handling it.

The critical question is site elevation. Tsunami is a Japanese word because, contrary to us Americans, the Japanese always knew of the risk of tsunamis. Why did the government allow them to build at an elevation of 30 feet (10 meters) above sea level? Everybody with a brain must have known this was a time-bomb.

Site Elevation ............ – too low at grade and ignored historic tsunami elevations
Sea Wall ................... – inadequate to protect the facility from flooding
Emergency Generators – only one provided for each unit and not protected from flooding
Emergency Switchgear – not protected from flooding

IMO, it will not be long until Japan will be geared up to expand it's empire again. You can't honestly believe they want to stay around this disaster do you. It might be the reason for military buildup.

I dont know what to think of it anymore. Its a giant mess, a disaster of proportions humans have never seen.
We humans did this to ourselves and we only have ourselves to blame.

I still haven't heard anything about the tokyo aquifer that is supposedly real close to the plant.
If a good portion of japan's drinking water becomes contaminated how could they live there.

More so, having second hand knowledge of nuclear disasters....why would ANYONE want to stay.
Fukushima is a run away train, good luck trying to stop it. Damage control is all that can be done at this point.

If i were these people i would be leaving en mass.

People are numb to disasters, and if there is not a natural one or one related to a natural phenomenon, then we will just manufacture one. Wars are pretty reliable disasters, and enormous amounts of money can be made from them. Earthquakes, tornado's, hurricanes and forest fires are always too unpredictable, you can never plan and manipulate their outcome. Fukushima... who..... oh yea Japan... Thats a world away, it don't bother me. I heard that 'they' were going to do something with that, or maybe 'they' already did.

TV program actors, reality actors, that's all thats important.
Well in a decade or so when people start getting tumors and cancers, those on the West coast and the Pacific rim experience these and more, deformed and still born fetus's and all the things that go with the catastrophe, people might wake up. But I think it is unlikely in the world climate we are in. And speaking of climate..... what if the site gets inundated as oceans rise...... Yea, were screwed, but the buck don't stop here.....Wait till the Pacific plastic dump becomes radioactive from absorbing all this debris.
Could it be worse? Don't worry, it soon will be.

Correction: there is no known MUNDANE fix for this. Not a single brilliant mind can come up with an answer while thinking INSIDE THE BOX.

When humanity is staring at its own extinction, it will have a choice. It can either tap into the paranormal powers of our collective mind, which it normally represses, and which are up to the Fukushima challenge many times over. Or it can let itself be destroyed.

I take it that you're Chinese...

In case you haven't realised, this has nothing to do with what some Japanese people did to Chinese people generations ago and vica versa. Your attitude and "karma" is a root cause of the majority of death and destruction throughout history. You really need to embrace peace and love for your fellow humans if humanity even stands a chance.

Furthermore, in case you haven't noticed, the radiation leaking into the pacific enters currents that take it down the Japanese coast and onto the Chinese coast before it heads offshore. It is the Chinese people who will suffer first outside of Japan.

This really is an international incident that is going to effect the whole world. Why haven't we heard anything from the U.N? The're pretty quick to "keep the peace" in places where there is oil and gas. Where are they now?

Ah, I see. I guess I was speculating on some sort of monolithic shadow conspiracy to cause horrific damage to the populace en masse. A stretch perhaps, but I don't really put much past 'them' these days, especially considering the date that this tragedy occurred on.

Anyway, thanks for your candor, I found your overview from page 2 to be very informative and well presented.

While an awful situation, it isnt helped with bogus sensationalism like this.
What they're actually talking about is a meltdown or fire, which is bad enough in itself, but its worded to mislead the reader into thinking EXPLODING BOMB.

As evidenced by the reply:

The rods will overheat, the metal cladding will soften, buckle and corrode, exposing the fuel pellets, which will disintegrate, releasing "hot particles" into the atmosphere as smoke and dust. These will return to the ground and wash into the aquifers or ocean.

Whether or not they explode like a bomb is a mere technicality. Its where the residue goes that matters.

if they dont cause the rods to explode,

Good grief, isnt the plain truth bad enough?

I guess whoever is here in 3 Generations time will sure know what plonkers we had on this Planet 250 years before to be messing with Nuclear Science!

Was waiting for someone to say it...Guess what, folks?? There is no question this admin would crumble to the pangs of a nation that fell on their own sword and spend billions and billions of our money making sure that it "rained comfort" for them while the tax payer takes it yet again in the rear supporting hopeless droves of meat sacks.

I checked the link to read the report on event 49290 and I don't see where it states anything about a radioactive cloud over the west coast. It basically says that there was a malfunction. Can you please clarify? I have a lot of family on the west coast so I am very interested. Thanks

'Merica! - Say howdy, look us in the eye, stop eating raw *uckin' fish, shake a person's hand, open a goddam door for a lady and 'Merica up, or get the *uck out.

This is one of the most disgusting and ludicrously vile things I've read in quite some time, you're quite the piece of work. Even more irritating is the fact that you had the gall to follow it up with a quote from Christ which speaks directly to the contrary of your little hate speech-

I see that you've edited it now, but I'll leave the quote so all can see the vitriol that your original train of thought included. Honestly, I'd rather befriend an Asian robot (yes, an actual robot) than a narcissistic, jingoistic douchebag such as yourself. The fact that you actually said 'Merica! is hilarious and unsettling at the same time... alas.

You really need to fix your brain, too bad it isn't worse? Are you some kind of lunatic? And this is not about what The Japanese did in Nanking, this is a World wide catastrophe you imbecile. Think outside your little box for a minute or two.

Maybe if some of you actually left your safe little homes and traveled the world you would have a better understanding of what the real world perspective of Japan is instead of thinking they are USA friend you could understand only USA cares about this.

Well you better start caring about it, cause you're not escaping it either, it will effect you and your family too.

This is almost comical get over yourself America the Japanese are not and have never been a friend to anyone but themselves!

Comical? There is nothing comical about this situation. I see you're out of reach and that you do not have the ability to think logically about this situation. Not even going to waste anymore of my time. It must be quite a place, that space between your ears.

Ice-nine, anyone?

Please tell me someone gets that reference.

Off topic, but Cats Cradle by Kurt Vonnegut?

Thanks a lot Redneck for providing the basic lowdown on the monster 100 page thread. Its clearly evident you know what you're talking about, and it is appreciated.
