Can anyone identify what this box was used for - think it's a snuff box but not sure with the V and chain inside?

Thanks

any hallmarks on the thing and if so do they all agree? something about it just looks like its been altered as having something to start in the middle but only go to one side seems strange as generally most chains would go from the middle to a middle point

I remember the smell of snuff as my grandmother used to take it, that does look like a snuff box I agree, the chain and V are odd though unless it was some kind of lady's box using the V to apply a small amount of snuff though I truly have never seen such, look up such on bing images and google images.

Looks like some sort of absorbent pad is inside... Could it be a container for perfume like the rich used to use so they wouldn't have to endure the stench on the street? You could even wrap your finger around the"v" and chain to hold it up to your nose as you passed by particularly unwashed masses.

My first thoughts were as your's and I thought snuff box, but on further inspection of your images, I have decided it was too clean for a snuff box and because its shiny and petite, it is most likely a ladies item..
it may be a vinaigrette, as suggested in one of the other posts, used by ladies when they came across unplesant odours..the link below is to
Association of Small Collectors of Antique Silver or ASCAS for short. might help a little in tracking it down or eliminating this possibliity
