An 11 year old girl wondering the highway, in the nude, is quite strange and the LEO probably suspected mental illness or drug intoxication. What is he to do to subdue her? Incapacitate her so he doesn't get bit or scratched. Although cruel, what other options are there, animal snare?

You are defending a tactic that his fellow officers relieved him for using. As far as having to use a taser....it's called using your hands. Most of them wear kevlar gloves anyways. Big strong cop can't handle a little girl? come on.

Also if anyone actually bothered to watch the video. The traffic was already stopped, she could have run around as much as she'd liked as no cars were driving near her. So the first quoter above has no leg to stand on. Secondly, seeing a naked child does not make me bark orders at her which will result in pain if not obeyed. First and foremost a properly trained [female even] officer should feel protective. As the father said [if you would have watched the video - fenson76], she is a happy girl and loves cars. Going up to her, kneeling down, calling her sweety and taking her hand, she would have happily followed the disgusting police woman into the cruiser, because she likes going into cars. The girl shoudl have been treated like a victim, not a f&&ing criminal.

So a little bit of compassion would have solved everything in a really humane way, no snares or traps needed.

Last but not least I'd like to ask why all police in the states think that everyone is some kind of wild monster that needs hurting, rather than being trained to read a situation?
Your police thinks that all of you are enemies rather than humans that need protecting.

I once found an old lady in front of our house, who wore no underpants. She was confused and so I called the police [UK]. They were so nice and calm and friendly to this woman who would NOT do anything they asked her to. An ambulance was called but she didn't want to go, so nobody could force her. I gave her a pair of trousers to wear and she was let go because an adult can not be forced.

I read later that she was found by her son, still wandering around.

But what I am saying here is had this been in the US, this poor lady would probably be dead of a heart attack by tazer.

I can not condone what the first quoter said. There was NO excuse whatsoever for using the tazer in this case. Even trying to justify it is completely out of order.

I agree this is sickening. I cant imagine what if anything was going through that Officers mind to feel the need to do this.

But nobody is going to rise up over this, in a week most Americans will be back to their normal lives, never once believing that anything bad could ever happen to them. No no, not them. No no, not in my home town. No no, not at my school etc, etc, etc.

And when it does happen, because this world is a very dangerous place, they will call the police. And even though you hate us, we will respond. And after its done you can go back to hating us.

You're allowed to hate us, its your right to your own opinion. I'm not even going to try to change your mind.

Its the nature of this job....heroes when we catch the Boston marathon bomber, neutralize the active shooter at the school, arrest the pedophile down the street. Hated when you realize that we are just as human as you....and are just as capable of being pathetically stupid as anyone else.

Look, I get your point. Really, I do. But my point of saying "police state" is that laws are being put in to place to make everyone a target and a criminal. There has to be balance, and right now things are rapidly becoming unbalanced due to the direction our "leaders" are taking us.

Wow. Has America given up? Really? The police seem to be acting like there is no law of decently in the states anymore. No need to tase that little girl at all. The cops cannot say that did not know she was 11 or that she was dangerous at all.

They need to do better background checks on the cops they hire. This on has a screw lose for sure. I wonder how many people like this cop are wearing a badge these days?

I don't understand how all of this police brutality is coming out of the wood-works all of a sudden, though. And I don't know what is up with this... it seems entirely sketchy.

The police officers around here have just decided to completely forget about having a legitimate reason to pull people over and are doing search and seizures randomly. I've experienced it, and so has one of my friends, neither of us got a ticket or had anything to find, either.

Indeed it is =/

First the police don't know if the girl has any health problems which actually can cause death by the taser. Also we should be "glad" the police is still the police. Let's welcome martial law and a militarized police force in the near future.

Nothing surprising here. Of a country who's reared on violence and war, how can people expect anything but shootig from the hip from its citizenry, much less its trigger-happy constabulary?

Everything is proceeding just as expected...

The main reason I posted this thread is because I have a 10 year old little brother with autism and this caused the subject too touch a chord other than just the standard outrage of being sick and uncalled for actions by this officer.

Too serve and protect and break a brotha's neck is the motto now days for a lot of these younger officers it seems.

I would like to thank the ATS member and officer Instructoralpha that has answered questions we have had and for him not trying to downplay or stick up for this disgrace to the uniform. I figured a police officer would be the first to try to defend the actions of this officer but i was wrong in my assumptions.

I have a cousin and an uncle that are police officers I have alot of respect for them and the tough and dangerous job they preform day in and day out that being said. I still see the militarization of the police force in this country ridiculous and way over the top. More and more story's of this nature are popping up every day now it seems. There needs to be a lot of change in law enforcement recruitment it seems along with techniques and training.

I also wanna thank everyone that has posted there opinions on my thread i have enjoyed reading each and everyone. I have star-ed each post made here, except one that was way outta line imo.

Militarized police tasing and killing our children and pets, when will the masses wake up to the power they have given these agencies that claim to serve and protect us while really causing just as much harm as the criminal in a lot of areas.

Is there no end to the brutality? why couldn't they just walk up to her and lead her to their car?

where's the compassion? Do these officers have children and would they taser their own?
This kind of action is on the rise and I refuse to become desensitized to the brutality law enforcement uses
on civilians.

And what about the msm up there calling her a women, only one time in the report did they refer to her as a girl
what the matter they couldn't use the proper term "little girl" not woman not young woman not young girl
she was a little girl!!

Our world has turned upside down and I'm personally sick to death of it.

www.oregonlive.com...

"The trooper was "worried about hallucinogenic impairment," when the girl ran out into traffic lanes, he said.

After two warnings, the trooper used her taser to bring the girl down, Hastings added."

1. It was a female Trooper who tasered the girl. Being a female, she probably felt more threatened than a male Trooper. Police training uses the Plus 1 theory of force, which basically says that if a person is not complying then you go 1 step above their actions in order gain compliance, ie..taser. A female officer can demonstrate the need for the use of more force than a male officer can.

2. It is reported that the "girl" did run out into traffic lanes after being verbally warned to stop.

Shoot first, ask questions later. Why work when you can just squeeze a trigger. That's law enforcements way.

If a cop cannot handle an 11 year old naked and defenseless girl.
Then he shouldn't be wearing the uniform.

Before I say anything else, the video starts out saying "young woman". What?! When were 11 year old children women?

Anyways, this is disgusting. Honestly, I'm at a loss for words. If I were the parents I'd DEMAND retribution. Honestly, let's get the PIGS off the police force!

You can't taser mentally unbalanced children or anyone for that matter. And yes, any other non risky method is how you do it. But he was even more of a threat to her IMO. Someone who would treat her like that is far too dangerous to be in the presence of a child.

You are kidding me right? Let's take a look at this rationally if we might. We have a police officer...I'm willing to guess he's a big man, let's say 6'0, and 200 lbs. I think that would be an average size for a police officer these days. He's likely wearing body armour, surely has cut proof gloves...they all do.

Now in the other corner we have an 11 year old girl. Correction, a potentially mentally ill 11 year old girl. Is it really that bad in the US that you would automatically assume that an 11 year old girl is high on drugs? Seems a remote possibility. This girl couldn't weigh in at more than 100 lbs and I'm being generous. She is naked, and therefore not concealing a shotgun or missle launcher.

So with these important facts, you mean to tell me that there was no way this police officer could wrap a blanket around this girl and subdue her if it came to it? They have blankets in their cars. Instead, this officer, to save her from wandering onto the highway, decided to risk hurting or killing her by tasing her. Had she had been on some strong drugs it could have caused cardiac arrest....any way you cut it, this just was'nt justified.

This just futher reinforces my belief that the militarization of our police forces is producing an "us against them" mentality that makes it much easier for officers to use force arbitrarily...even on an 11 year old girl.

this is a terrible situation for everyone involved.
i'm sure the police officer feels terrible about the incident. no person wants to be responsible for hurting a child. my guess is this officer did what he felt was the appropriate action. albeit the wrong action.

wearing a badge doesn't take away his humanity.

should he be disciplined? yes of course.
should he never be allowed to be a peace officer? maybe

should we automatically think of the officer as a jack booted, torture loving, gun slinging, heartless monster? ....... of course not.

whatever the legal method of investigating and discipline is, is what we should be looking for.

Need more info. It's certainly possible that this cop effed up big time...

BUT...The Taxi Driver that reported the girl to the cops described the girl as appearing as if she was on "Bath Salts" or some other drug. Bath Salts are the drugs that have led to people eating one another.

If the officer tried to apprehend her and she darted into expressway traffic?

I don't think he handled it well at all...but it isn't as cut and dry as some of the cop haters around here would have you believe either.
