I am sorry to hear that Hannah Smith has passed away.

Personally something does not add up. For a start they are contracted by the 'mirror' newspaper

This sounds like a Tia Sharp case Hijacking the Social media frenzy that is going on now!

I might be VERY WRONG if I am (I hope I am) then My deepest apologies

news.sky.com...

I think that it could be a 'call me dave' clampdown. Hello George Orwell 1984

www.mirror.co.uk...

If your daught had commited suicide would you oto a mainstream newspaper?

Me personally NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I would be to greafed out and not be able to talk

You wanna know the NUMBER ONE way to NOT be bullied on a website?
Dont go to it

Bad news indeed. Social media can be a useful tool or it can be an open door for all kinds of abuse.
I have 3 kids still living at home, 16, 15 & 9 and none of them have Facebook. It has saved them a lot of grief and drama in their lives. I don't understand why so many parents lack the backbone just to ban their kids from using these stupid sites.

Lets get back on topic If you found your daughter dead infront of a computer would you do a crying session infront of cameras via a mainstream gutter press newspaper?

It's always tragic when someone takes their own life, especially from something like bullying, but to blame it on social media is a cop-out. People have bullied others since the beginning of time. These things are inevitable in the twisted world we live in today. Families need to be stronger, so when bullying does happen, the kid knows how to brush it off. Ive done bullying and I've been bullied before, looking back at it now it was totally childish on both fronts and it should always be used as a learning experience for children/teens. If life gets you down don't go to extremes, just ignore it, and move on... I'm sorry she passed, but bullying shouldnt be treated like the end of the world... Parents need to do better parenting so their kids dont freak out when a little bullying comes their way.

Once again, RIP Hannah Smith.

I know it is and it is on topic. What about that other girl that was bullied on facebook, she even moved to a different city to get away from it but what does she do in the other city? Gets right back on facebook.
I mean come on, you can even block individuals on facebook if she just HAD to have it..ffs

If your daughter killed herself infront of YOUR computer would you give a intervew to a gutter press newspaper?

Think about it!

Again If I am wrong I am deeply sorry!

No. I wouldn't advertise how I failed as a parent.

So these parents obviously had no idea what was going on in their child's life and expect the police to arrest the people who 'bullied' the girl?

Give me a break!

If somebody is harrassing you on the internet then use the power button and turn the thing off.

I hear about this happening and it seems there is always more to the story. The girl had problems but she couldn't go to her parents?

Again I am just putting my 'idea' out but this sounds like a tia sharp case:-

en.wikipedia.org...

Anyone who watches Morse or and crime series could profile this with many cases.

Again I hope I am seriously wrong and If I am please accept my deepest applogies

Seriously your daughter has commited self death and then you go blubbing to a newspaper! IT SERIOUSLY DOES NOT ADD UP!

I think the parents need to be more vocal and communicate to their children about online bullying in addition to sexual predators. Similar to the sex education in schools, the social media pros and cons should be introduced and/or discussed somehow in the social studies IMO. The kids need to be aware of the existing pitfalls and/or consequences including isolation and loneliness at times.

Are you saying you think the parents are involved in her death, that they murdered her or something?

(If I'm way off base please correct me)

I don't know about that I think they are just lousy parents. I can't believe they continue to visit the website!

Well, considering their daughter just took her own life, the "crying session" is pretty darn normal as the one thing that most parents fear the most is losing their children. Toss in shock, anger at those who bullied/those who did nothing, and a whole slew of other feelings. Personally, I'd probably be catatonic on the floor. My children are my world. I don't fault them for sharing their outrage publicly, whatever the medium. A lot of social media websites have "rules" against behaviors but, from what I've seen and others have reported, very rarely do they actually enforce those rules. However, a lot of parents seem to take a lot of confidence in both the rules of a website and the expectations of societal behavior amongst teens because their viewpoint does not include that particular world. They gauge it on their views/experiences of the world and not what actually occurs. Sometimes I really worry about teens as they do seem to have a serious problem with thinking that telling another to go kill themselves is both cool and funny.

Neither of my own children are on social media and my eldest only frequents very well moderated forums. It's been their own choice after a lot of long conversations on the subject. My eldest was on it for a short while and saw enough to dump it entirely.

A lot of opinions but no real YES or NO

I will ask again if you found your daughter dead via your computer would you goto the press days after it had happened crying?

Me personaly no I would need counciling and medication!

So would you goto a gutter press and start crying on camera if your daughter killed herself?

Yes or No?

To be fair, your thread title doesn't relate to what you are asking....

To answer your question... NO

But consider they may be in shock, overcome with grief, angry and wanting results... as someone earlier mentioned.

They may just be completely shallow and wanted the cash.. who knows?

Getting a bit sick of seeing this all over the news on tv and online.
Social media did not kill this girl.... Ask.fm didn't either, bullies did.
If there wasn't social media then they would just bully here the old fashioned way, at school, out in town with her friends.
The boycott of this site by advertisers is pathetic, did they do it to Twitter where women have been threatened with rape and violence and death?
Did they leave facebook after people were bullied to death and memorials were trolled by sick, weird people?

No.

I don't use any social media sites, facebook, Twitter or the hundreds of others.
It's a very silly way to spend your time. How about meeting people for real, outside? How about phoning or emailing?
All these sites are, is a way for people to show off, spout off, talk crap and play stupid little games with people.
If you use these sites then you need to think about what you're supporting.

To pick on this one site so much and make an example is plain wrong.
Just because they don't have the might and power of Google YouTube or Twitter, this company is being made to bare the brunt of the backlash against online bullying and teen suicides, and it's wrong.

And no, I'd never even heard of this site before today and have no affiliation with them, just think the media and corporate reaction to them is massively disproportionate.

Bullies didn't kill her either, she did that of her own free will.

Bullies bullied her, it's ultimately down to her to decide whether those bullies matter to her or not, she chose to kill herself.

Tragic but all the same it was her own action.

Well of course but their actions led to her death, their bullying resulted in her making that decision
They directly had an effect that led to her death, the site did not and has no control, like every other site, over what users post to one another.

Your comparison does not work.

The bullies caused her death.

ETA: none of this has anything to do with y point.

Which is that the company is being persecuted and losing business for something that happens on every single social networking site, it's being made and example of and that is wrong.
