I don't believe that I've ever posted in the Rant Forum, so this is a first for me...

For the last three days in a row, as I've been on my way to work, I've watched several people pulling out of fast food restaurants and proceed to throw their thrash into the parking lot as they pulled away. I don't get pissed off too often, but things like that really get under my skin, esecially when they are driving right past a garbage can placed there by the business just for the purpose.

This morning when I saw a lady throw her straw wrapper out of the window of her car, I was really tempted to stop, pick it up, follow her, flag her down, give it back to her, tell her she forgot something at the restaurant, and then drive away....If I wasn't running late to work, I probably would have.

That reminds me of a great story my Dad told me...He owned a business on the lake. For weeks he had watched a fisherman put his boat in the water, go fish for several hours, then return, throw his trash all over the parking lot, and then leave. One day, the fisherman drove into the parking lot in a nice $30,000 convertible, and his buddy had brought the boat with his truck...they went fishing and left the top down on the convertible.

So for the next two hours my Dad went around the parking lot filling up two large garbage bags full of all the trash from the whole parking lot, and then dumped it into the drivers seat of the convertible.

When the fisherman got back, he just stood beside his car with a
look on his face...he never said a word. He just pushed the trash over so he could get in.

I love karma.

That may be the most horrible excuse for littering that I've ever heard of...

Good one, about that fisherman.

But it's funny you should mention this. I've noticed that littering has made a comeback. In the '60s and '70s there was a huge campaign to stop it. And for years things were pretty good. But now I live a block from a high school, and during the school year I have to pick up bagfuls of trash and garbage where the kids come by and just throw it in the street. The light stuff blows up against my fence; the slushy-drink cups lie in the street and gutter. I've put a garbage can by the curb, but no one pays any attention to it. I'm thinking when the new school-year starts I'll put a big sign on it that says, "Please don't litter." See if it does any good.

Not suprising, either, that kids do this. They learn it from their parents. I've noticed that a lot of drivers have again started tossing garbage out their windows--just like in the '50s-'60s, before the litter campaigns started. I've been driving the Interstate to work and seen people pick up all the trash that's accumulated in their vehicle floorboards and toss it out both side windows and even sun-roofs. It's really egregious, too, to watch someone drive along and every 5-10 seconds have garbage fly out their windows, leaving a trail for miles.

Sad....

So, according to your logic, criminals shuold then commit crimes just so police officers can have work?

...I'm sorry, but your logic is flawed...

Glad your dad had the mcnuggets to take a stand. Evil triumphs when good men do naught, right?

I have a half-baked idea of how world peace utopia could be achieved, and I use littering to illustrate this. The earth could work for everyone as long as we all took responsibility for our actions. If we all put in exactly what we take out of the equation, that results in equilibrium. If you take a shopping cart to your car, put it back where it belongs. If you create a piece of trash through consumption, throw it in a bin where it belongs. If you make a mess, clean it up yourself.

Now apply the above to any situation. Take responsibility for every one of your actions. If everybody picked up their trash, both literal and metaphorical, I think it could be a much more interesting place to live

All the ills of society are the fault of lazy, inconsiderate people who simply refuse to take responsibility for themselves and pick up their own litter.

You think I can sell this speech to a Miss America contestant or something?

I know, right?
I think it's a sound plan, it just requires a very big IF to work

I can still sell it to a Miss America contestant though

Hear that, rapists? Better get busy. Wouldn't want the rape counselors to lose their jobs.

You know OP, that would be a wonderful idea for a website. Throw something together like these User submitted revenge sites that show a girlfriend or other ex- in bad positions ...but this one? Build entirely as a place where users can post the self-shot photos of this sort of outrage in the act. I'd love to see the pics of litter flying out the door ...WITH a readable license tag the owner can also consider public after that.

If common sense and a pride in where they live isn't enough? ...and for too many outright PIGS these days, pride is the punch line of a joke, not something to feel in where one lives ...... then publicly shaming the cretins might be the way to go. I can't imagine any legal downside? As long as a pic shows the crime in action and not just someone doing nothing with the accusation of "...and they HAD just done such and such".

Shame the pigs back into their own slop, instead of sharing it with everyone else in the world!

I don't understand why people litter ...is it really just pure laziness and the thought that someone will pick it up for them?...that's quite sad if the case.

I have to clean the trash at our local park everytime we go. It's ridiculous. There are trash cans but yet...there's trash everywhere! I just take a bag with me and/or just go around and pick it up and throw it away..it's quite easy.

My friend threw a whole bag of fast food out the window one time when we were in high school..And the girls we were riding with turned around and made her pick it up off the street. Hah..

I enjoyed the story you told of the trash in the convertible ...haha...nice.

Grateful?

To pick up your trash of the street a person would feel grateful?

my opinion is they would be grateful if they had empty the bins and not pick up trash idiots throw onto the street.

That to me would be a little less degrading to a person than having to pick up scraps from others.

I am an idiot/hypocrite that has done the same by littering so I know of what i speak.

Its is degrading to those having to clean your mess.

Its a community service given to those that have been prosecuted by the law and this is their penalty.

If you believe they would be grateful why not apply for a job, a job that gives a person gratitude is a good job true is it not?

This pisses me off ROYALLY~

I NEVER throw garbage out the window~ I almost punched a employee for tossing a McDonald's back out the window of my Truck when we were driving cross country

It's not job security, IT"S CALLED RESPECT!~ Respect your PLANET~ DONT" BE A IGNORANT and forgive me MODS for lack of better words: PRICK~

I'd rather litter my truck with garbage and clean it out when I find a receptical than to do the MOST BLATENT IGNORANT act a iresponsible individual can take~

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you when you say that littering is bad, but flagging down a car to scream at them for throwing a straw wrapper out their window? You don't think that's a bit overkill?

Some people go out of their way to litter. I consider dog poop as littering when a dog's owner doesn't pick it up. So, what do the dog owners do in my city? They set their alarms (I'm guessing here) to get up and walk their dogs at three in the morning! It has to be true because when I'm walking to work at 5:30 I'm confronted with an obstacle course of dog poop all the way to work!
