War is the most disgusting behavior imaginable....the premise there can be a favorite song about it ....I don't have a favorite song about war...but I have one that I think is very poignant and the fact it was written in the 60's and still resonates with truth in today's environment leads me to place it in your thread...I didn't see anyone else post it...if so my apologies for any redundancy...

artists.letssingit.com...

The eastern world, it is exploding
Violence flarin', bullets loadin'
You're old enough to kill, but not for votin'
You don't believe in war, but what's that gun you're totin'
And even the Jordan River has bodies floatin'

But you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve
of destruction.

Don't you understand what I'm tryin' to say
Can't you feel the fears I'm feelin' today?
If the button is pushed, there's no runnin' away
There'll be no one to save, with the world in a grave
[Take a look around ya boy, it's bound to scare ya boy]

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve
of destruction.

Yeah, my blood's so mad feels like coagulatin'
I'm sitting here just contemplatin'
I can't twist the truth, it knows no regulation.
Handful of senators don't pass legislation
And marches alone can't bring integration
When human respect is disintegratin'
This whole crazy world is just too frustratin'

And you tell me
Over and over and over again, my friend
Ah, you don't believe
We're on the eve
of destruction.

Think of all the hate there is in Red China
Then take a look around to Selma, Alabama
You may leave here for 4 days in space
But when you return, it's the same old place
The poundin' of the drums, the pride and disgrace
You can bury your dead, but don't leave a trace
Hate your next-door neighbor, but don't forget to say grace
And, tell me over and over and over and over again, my friend
You don't believe
We're on the eve
Of destruction
Mm, no no, you don't believe
We're on the eve
of destruction.

'Annihilation'

From dehumanization to arms production,
For the benefit of the nation or it's destruction?

Power is Power. It’s the law of the land.
Those living for death will die by their own hand.

Life's no ordeal if you come to terms.
Reject the system dictating the norms.

From dehumanization to arms production
to hasten the nation towards it's destruction.

it's your choice... your choice... your choice... your choice....
Peace or Annihilation?

It's hard to choose only one song, but A Perfect Circle - 'eMOTIVe' (Youtube Playlist) is without a doubt my favorite collection of (anti)war songs.

Described by APC’s Maynard James Keenan as “a collection of songs about war, peace, love and greed.” The tracks chosen bridge three decades of protest songs, spanning an array of genres – hardcore punk and heavy metal, new wave and Delta blues, folk rock and rhythm & blues.

Among the insurgent classics reinterpreted on “eMOTIVe” are:
John Lennon - “Imagine”
Marvin Gaye - “What’s Going On”
Memphis Minnie - “When The Levee Breaks”
Depeche Mode - “People Are People”
Devo - “Freedom Of Choice”
Black Flag - “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie”
Fear - “Let’s Have A War”
Joni Mitchell - “Fiddle And The Drum”
Nick Lowe (by way of Elvis Costello) - “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love And Understanding.”
Crucifix - “Annihilation”

You familiar with any of Roger Waters' post-Floyd albums?

Many songs from his 'Amused To Death' album are related to war.
This is just one of them:
'The Bravery Of Being Out Of Range'

(Incomplete Lyrics. skipped first half)

And through the range finder over the hill
I saw the frontline boys popping their pills
Sick of the mess they find on their desert stage
And the bravery of being out of range
Yeah the question is vexed

Old man what the hell you gonna kill next?
Old timer who you gonna kill next?
"Hey bartender over here
Two more shots and two more beers
Sir turn up the TV sound
The war has started on the ground."

Just love those laser guided bombs
They're really great for righting wrongs
You hit the target and win the game
From bars 3,000 miles away
.......3,000 miles away

We play the game
with the bravery of being out of range
We zap and maim
with the bravery of being out of range
We strafe the train
with the bravery of being out of range
We gain terrain
with the bravery of being out of range
We play the game
with the bravery of being out of range

This song falls in the metal genre, and I feel it to be one of the most intelligent war songs ever written.

What do you mean I don't believe in God?
Talk to him every day
What do you mean I don't support your system?
I go to court when I have to
What do you mean I can't get to work on time?
Got nothing better to do
What do you mean I don't pay my bills?
Why do you think I'm broke? Huh?

If there's a new way
I'll be the first in line
But, it better work this time

What do you mean I hurt your feelings?
I didn't know you had any feelings
What do you mean I ain't kind?
Just not your kind
What do you mean I couldn't be President Of the United States of America?
Tell me something, it's still 'We the people', right?

If there's a new way
I'll be the first in line
But, it better work this time

Can you put a price on peace?
Peace, peace sells, peace, peace sells
Peace sells, but who's buying?

Peace sells, but who's buying?
No, no, no, no, no!
Peace sells

'Peace Sells'

My first response to the thread question was "dey ain't NO war song that could be called my [expletive] favourite!!"

Then, I thought some more, and began going through the thread to see if Sgt. MacKenzie was here.

It resonates with me also.

eta: .............. and then I thought some more and remembered Avenged Sevenfold - Gunslinger

I just love these posts - I remember so much good music. Here's the big one for me (well war again is really my #1).

This one Samuel Barber's Adagio for Strings will always bring the horror of war front and center because of this movie: Enjoy. LOL - I was looking for anti war hip hop - still looking, but here's this:

There is a history of war being inspirational (what is the word for motivating in a negative manner rather than positive - is there such a word? Inspirational seems horrific in the coming content - for classical composers

Shostakovich's 7th:

From wikipedia (sorry)

The piece soon became very popular in both the Soviet Union and the West as a symbol of resistance to Nazi totalitarianism and militarism. It is still regarded as the major musical testament of the estimated 25 million Soviet citizens who lost their lives in World War II. The symphony is played frequently at the Leningrad Cemetery, where half a million victims of the 900-day Siege of Leningrad are buried. As a condemnation of the German invasion of the Soviet Union, the work is particularly representative of the political responsibilities that Shostakovich felt he had for the state, regardless of the conflicts and criticisms he faced throughout his career with Soviet censors and Joseph Stalin.

It's easy to find on you tube if interested.

Victory at Sea -is one of my favorites. There was a TV show by the same name in the 1950s -60s. Very inspirational. Today the Navy's motto is "a force for good" When their motto should be" killers at sea" Oh that's not PC..

Sorry, I don't speak Russian. I've found this lyrics:

Google translate says this is the pronounciation:

Chernyy voron, chernyy voron, Chto ty v'yesh'sya nado mnoy? Ty dobychi ne dozhdesh'sya, Chernyy voron, ya ne tvoy! Chto ty kogti raspuskayesh' Nad moyeyu golovoy? Il' dobychu sebe chayesh'? Chernyy voron, ya ne tvoy! Zavyazhu smertel'nu ranu Podarennym mne platkom, A potom s toboy ya stanu Govorit' vse ob odnom. Poleti v moyu storonku, Skazhi mamen'ke moyey, Ty skazhi moyey lyubeznoy, Chto za rodinu ya pal. Otnesi platok krovavyy Miloy lyubushke moyey. Ty skazhi - ona svobodna, YA zhenilsya na drugoy. Vzyal nevestu tikhu-skromnu V chistom pole pod kustom, Obvenchal'na byla svakha - Sablya vostraya moya. Kalena strela venchala Sredi bitvy rokovoy. Vizhu, smert' moya prikhodit, Chernyy voron, ves' ya tvoy!

And Google translate (which is far from perfect, though) to english:

Black crow, black crow,
What do you veshsya me?
You extraction will not wait,
Black Raven, I'm not yours!

What do you lash claws
Over my head?
Ile prey chaesh?
Black Raven, I'm not yours!

Tie the mortal wound
Bestowed me with a handkerchief,
And then I'm with you
Talk about the same thing.

Flying in my aside,
Tell my mama,
You tell my beloved,
What I fell for their country.

Take bloody handkerchief
Lyubushka my sweet.
You tell me - it is free,
I am married to another.

He took the bride and modest tihu
In the open field under a bush,
Obvenchalna was the matchmaker -
Sabre my eyes open.

Cullen was crowned boom
Among the fateful battle.
I see my death comes,
Black Crow, all I yours!

We'll need someone who speaks Russian to get a better translation
