So you are telling me that if Zimmerman had EVER verbally said a "racist" remark, or belief...

that he would have been screwed, and potentially subjected to a future hate crimes investigation, when the event had NOTHING to do with race???

Wow, scary!! I'm sure we have ALL said or done things that were "racist", just human nature... but can you imagine defending your life, and the person you shot was a minority, etc., and the prosecution questions people and witnesses to see if you had EVER spoken a racist comment, and if you have, they proceed? What kind of crap is that??? So, I guess you can be crucified for your beliefs, or speech, even though you may be engaged in an event that has nothing to do with your beliefs (or non belief motivated - just unfortunate circumstances)...

I don't really agree with the whole 'hate crime' thing anyway. A crime is a crime and proving a certain motivation is difficult and unnecessary. We already have the appropriate punishment for the crime without adding in the 'hate crime' which is just an emotional element added to an already tragic situation.

I think Mark Ferman could answer that question.

I'm prolly the most racist person in this forum.

I regularly use the N word. I call my dog that all the time.

I call my wife a Jew. Because she's stingy with my money.

(I'm the bread winner, and a Jew myself)

I think that every Anglo person thinks they have a Cherokee Indian grandma.

I refuse to watch a porno with a black guy in it.

For some reason, I can't stand Asian American women. But I think Japanese women are sexy as hell.

Crazy huh?

I was just going to bring him up. Something like ten years before the OJ trial, Ferman said the 'n' word when talking to a fella about writing a book or something. He was talking 'in character' for the book. Something like that. So, 10 years later, huckster Johnny Cochran painted Ferman as a raging racist in order to get OJ off from the murder charge.

What they're meaning to imply is that if you don't like blacks you forfeit your right to defend yourself. Doesn't make sense to me either. Luckily, no matter what they did, they just couldn't manufacture any evidence to show that GZ was even the tiniest bit racist. Awww...

This is what concerns me... society has "slurs" for every race, and even within the same race, will people refer "to their own" in derogatory ways. I don't think this should imply anything. What is even worse, is if misfortune strikes, you are in a self defense situation and you kill someone you could actually be subjugated to legal proceedings based on what you may have said in the past or even currently, but not directly a motivator for what may have happened to you... society has become strange...

Of course then the point could be made that one might not have such "racist" tendencies to begin with if it weren't so common to need to defend one's self against them while fearing for one's life. But to point that out is, you guessed it, racist.

Yep. It's rather insane that one's REASON for committing a particular crime somehow makes it WORSE than any other instance of said crime. A beating is still a beating, a murder still a murder, etc.

i say racist things all the time. My wife is latina. She and I rib each other about our cultural backgrounds. She is "The Bean", or "Messkin Momma". She calls me her "Pink Little Piggy" (i tend to be on the pale side of white) and other affectionate names that don't sound affectionate.

Even our son gets some of the heat. We both call him Potato (brown on the outside, white on the inside). And he is known to retort to her with "Mojada" ("Wet" or "Wet back").

It isn't what you say, it is what you intend. And I am sure we have all said something racist at one point or another. Who cares?

You guys all voted for these schmucks. Not a single national candidate I have voted for since 1992 has won public office.
