A couple of weeks ago I did a thread about the blood type O rh negative( blood group whose red cells lack the Rh factor). One of the posters on that thread mentioned that we who have that blood type can not be cloned. I took a mental note to research that statement and well you know how it goes, I got busy with other things and it got put on the back burner...Until a few minutes ago when I decided to read some things about the cloning statement to see if that was true...so far as I can tell these source sites seem to echo that posters statement.

www.biotechnologyforums.com...

It has been observed that without RH protein, the cloned blood cell loses its required flexibility as well as the DNA strand is difficult to use after retrieving it. The root cause for this is related to the D antigen, its genetic makeup and receptors variations. In combination, all these factors make it difficult to clone RH negative blood cells and thus also in whole.

inourimage.wordpress.com...

Several labs have cloned the Rh factor, Goldstein says, but no one fully understands its three-dimensional structure. Therefore, researchers are only beginning to explore techniques for Rh conversion.

Okay...whats really going on here...Us rh negatives will attack and abort fetuses within in us as if they are a foreign matter, we cannot be cloned and there are not that many of us in the world as it is plus we are decreasing in numbers due to science and a little shot called Gamma Globulin (this basically prevents the fetus from having O rh - and taking on the more compatible blood type of the father)...This kinda makes me feel like an indangered species...any thoughts on this? would love to read them.

Meh, I wouldn't want to be cloned anyway. I have a 'doppleganger" in the next town that has caused me some grief over the years, so I'd hate to think what kind of troubles having a clone could bring! Besides, I will live on through my progeny- no need for a clone!

No immortality for you

Fear not, long before we see any true public acceptance of cloning/genetic manipulation, which I am a supporter of, we will be downloading our consciousnesses into computers. Grant it, we are still some time away from that, but new studies and develops are being made in this exact field and I am sure someone will post some related articles.

Immortality/propagation is not longer limited to flesh and blood expressions, but will become more and more digitized.

I always thought you RH negative people were all the same....I guess this proves me wrong.

Who wants to be a clown anyway
I know this world is a big circus but...

Is this a real doppleganger? or is it someone that looks a lot like you? Have you ever seen your doppleganger in person? If so what happened because Steven King said that if one meets his/her doppleganger it would not be good that it would throw a wrench into time and space???

Okay...I suppose I am just bummed because even if I wanted to be cloned I couldn't...I just have this feeling that in our very near future cloning ones self is going to be all the rage and just my luck I will be having to sit on the side lines and watch everyone else have all the fun...

Thats the problem...I do not want to be one of a kind. I wanna be two or three of a kind...

This woman could pass for my identical twin except for she has blue eyes and I have one brown and one blue eye. I heard about her for years but never met her until I was accused of having an affair with one of my girlfriend's husbands and it turned out to be my "doppleganger". We met after my friend's husband left her for this woman and he made the rounds to introduce her to all of his friends. Needless to say the friendship with him did not last as my husband and I eyed him suspiciously after meeting his girlfriend.

Heh, when we find a way to "transfer" our memory or brain into another body, it will be too bad for you!

Great story...and how odd it would be to have that happen...thanks for sharing that

Your blood can't be cloned. That doesn't mean you can't be cloned. A clone of you would start out as a zygote and eventually manufacture its own blood the old-fashioned way.

I don't understand, why would anyone want to spend their life hanging around with themselves. I like hanging around with different people...
...Sometimes they were just a tad bit too "different" though.

When I was born they threw out the mold. I guess it wasn't even good enough to make penicillin out of it.

You would not "control" your clone anyways! Just to have another one of you? I don't even know you and I don't want that.....The world has enough of you, and me, and everyone else for that matter!

Let's leave these games to God....

I would love to have another me...I could have a great scrabble partner, We could scratch each others backs, we could bring in two paychecks instead of one...oh so many benefits...

The deeper implication of not being able to be cloned would be that you could not receive benefits from genetic engineering.

i.e. spider goat, i.e. spider genes inserted into human skin to produce a bullet proof human.

Yes, you are ineligible to receive any benefit that immortality could present.

Hey, look at the bright side....at least you can't get HIV.....(unsubstantiated rumor that might be true)

There are bullet proof spiders? *shivers...What a creepy thought, a spider that can't be killed with a bullet, much less a shoe...say it isn't so...
