In honoring the seed biotechnology industry, this year's World Food Prize -- to many, the most prestigious prize in food and agriculture -- betrays the award's own mandate to emphasize "the importance of a nutritious and sustainable food supply for all people."
While profitable to the few companies producing them, GMO seeds reinforce a model of farming that undermines sustainability of cash-poor farmers, who make up most of the world's hungry. GMO seeds continue farmers' dependency on purchased seed and chemical inputs...
GMOs also threaten sustainability because they continue agriculture's dependence on diminishing and damaging fossil fuels and mined minerals, as well as a wasteful use of water.
The Rodale Institute, for example, found in its 30-year study, that organic methods used 45 percent less energy and produced 40 percent less greenhouse gases and outperformed chemical farming during drought years by as much as 31 percent.
Moreover, the planet already produces more than enough food for all, and 40 percent more per person than in 1970; yet today 870 million people, still suffer from extreme, long-term undernourishment because they lack power to access adequate food. Developed and controlled by a handful of companies, genetically engineered seeds further the concentration of power and the extreme inequality at the root of this crisis of food inaccessibility. Monsanto, for example, controls 90 percent of the U.S. soybean crop and 80 percent of the country's corn and cotton crops.
A stunning multi-year study in Africa by the United Nations Environment
Programme provides an answer. High external inputs of chemicals and
fertilizers are needed for conventional industrial agriculture and it is for this
kind of agriculture that GM crops are designed. UNEP found in side-by-side
trials conducted in multiple countries that farmers using agroecological
science outperformed farmers using conventional approaches by up to 179%.responsibletechnology.org...

as Monsanto and Syngenta are major sponsers of....you guessed it: The World Food Prize!
However, this has caused an immediate backlash, 81 Councillors of the
World Future Council have issued a scathing statement against this flagrant
hypocritical grandstanding.

it reminds me of something in some ayn rand novels where 'they' create various boards, councils and discussion groups .... to push and support facist agendas.

Can you tell me which of those "Councillors" are "global leaders?"
The WFC is one of the top references for Feed-In Tariff (FIT) laws that unlock renewable energy development in the international arena. Worldwide, over 60 countries have implemented a renewable energy policy and it is fair to say that the WFC has contributed significantly to this achievement. In 2012 alone the WFC has hosted and co-hosted over 20 parliamentary hearings, expert hearings, workshops, side events and roundtable discussions.

Yes, no more yeild, and the cost of GMO seeds compared to non GMO,
along with the cost of all of the Round Up toxic pesticide which is damaging
the soil, so more chemical fertilizers are needed! Its a profit sham.
Sold up a creek without a paddle, no wonder they have hired
Blackwater to infiltrate social media to try and squash public opinion,
thats all they have left, a phony front!
