Building collapse in Philadelphia, PA within past 30 mins.

Within the past 30 minutes their has been a building collapse in Center City Philadelphia.
This is about 5 blocks from where I work.
I am trying to figure out if their was anything interesting at that site as far as govt agencies, companies, whatever.
At this point the most logical explanation is structural failure but the situation is fluid.
If anything changes I will post it.

I was listening to a live stream and I think I heard something about demolition happening near the area.

As many as 10 trapped.

Ouch... I checked Google Earth and came up with a capture for everyone.



That's what the building used to look like.

Lets all hope there are no deaths and injuries aren't too serious.

The mayor is there .....

There was a fire station 2 blocks away, luckily.

It made response time quick for rescue efforts.

I've been in that thrift store. It's right across the street from where I used to work for a period of time.

Weirdness....

Yesterday a photographer was walking by the area and thought this person standing up on the side of the building looked "uncomfortable".

ETA: looking at the streetview Wabbit posted, looks like the building next to the thrift store was getting demolished.

Now it appears, the larger building collapsed the wrong way and fell onto the thrift store.

My only hope now - is that the creators of 'that song' were inside when it happened.

CBS says .... 3 buildings effected. One was under demolition. 9 in hospital. Multiple fire fighter units on scene. The TV news is asked to back off choppers so rescuers can hear workers trapped in the rubble.

Interview with witness .... Jordan ... "the building collapsed the wrong way ... it landed on a thrift shop'.

People walking on sidewalk fell over because it was shaking so badly.

The building under demolition went the wrong way.

I'm watching the firemen going through the rubble.
Looks a lot like what happened in Oklahoma last week.

So looking at the photo from yesterday, it does look like the part of building that was still standing yesterday is what collapsed over.

Aw I used to get cheap shirts from there when I was living up in Philly. That was more than ten years ago and the building looked like it was going to fall down back then.

CBS Breaking news still reporting two people missing.
They've got the big equipment in ... trying to move the bigger chunks of building.
They've moved the press and peds back ... incase it's a 'recovery' instead of rescue (I'd imagine).

Also reporting .... TWO 3-story buildings collapsed.
Third building partially collapsed.

3 major trauma centers nearby ... Minutes away.

(I use Jefferson for a lot of things ... their ER once ... it's generally a pretty good place)

Yes this really just looks like a "whoops" moment.

Why would people be allowed in a build next to or on the street next to a demolition. In the past, in videos that I have seen, people were kept well away from the site with the area blocked off.

Guess with only heavy equipment, nothing will go wrong.

I was at the DR when I first saw this was going on, had the nurse check to see what was going on on her lap top...

However, did I just read yesterday about a pressure cooker left in a hotel and warnings to stay away from the main part of town for a few days? Oh yes I remember it was on SQ site:

Seems far too many of these crazy things are happening far too often regardless of the reason from sink holes, inclement weather anomalies, EQs, mass die off's and stranding's, you name it, perhaps it is because of the digital age and people get instant info on real time events, but still.
