Ive studied graphic design for a part of my life. What you've done is an excellent job for your first go!
Just some general things you could improve....
The actual image needs to stand out more from the back ground. Hard to say over the computer, but if you have applied individual layers. Try applying
a strong "bevil & emboss" to the out ring and certain parts on the center piece, this will create depth and make it appear in front.
Your back ground star system is to also to crisp which takes away focus from the center piece. Your going to want to dull this somehow. This can be
done a few ways, Transparency, zoom/motion blur would probably be ideal, it will soften the pixels. Im not sure what youve done with the border, it
looks bevilled, you could reduce the amount if so, and add a drop shadow to give this depth also. Perhaps an outa glow/inner glow somewhere.
You may have already done some of these things, its hard to see with out it in front of me. Just experiment, and use lots of layers, keep as much
separate as possible. As soon as you merge two items you cant add an effect ever again.
