As a side note multiple sources list West and Waco as being two separate towns\cities.

WEST:

"West is a city in McLennan County, Texas, United States.[5] As of the 2010 census, the city population was 2,807.[1][6] It is named after T.M. West, the first postmaster of the city.[7] Despite its name, West is located in the north-central part of Texas, and located in the eastern half of the state."

WACO:

"Waco (/ˈweɪkoʊ/) is a city in and the county seat of McLennan County, Texas, United States.[3] It is situated along the Brazos River and I-35, halfway between Dallas and Austin. The city had a 2010 population of 124,805, making it the twenty-second most populous city in the state.[4] The Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area consists of McLennan County, which had a 2010 population of 234,906.[5]"

No. It's 30 miles from the outskirts of Waco.

It's a teeny town on I-35 in the middle of nowhere.

Stopped there for gas many, many times.

I asked my husband to look at it to.

He had the opposite reaction. He said it looked like gas ignited, the flashpoint being to the left and then boom.

Actually,it wasnt. The plant in question is in a very rural area, farmland mostly. There are a few homes nearby that have been there for many years. The school and apartment complex that were badly damaged are not close to the plant. It was just that big of an explosion. It was heard as far away as Italy,Texas, which is approximately 60 miles from West. The shock wave set off sesmic equipment, registering 2.1 on richter scale,in Amarillo,Texas. Thats 350 miles away.

Hello all. My question,,,,,why are all those buildings that got destroyed allowed to be built so close to the plant?? Seems that somebody should have evaluated the risks and determined worst case scenario of a possible situation like this and determined that NO building that occupies people, especially a nursing home should be built within a certain distance to the plant. Lack of regulations maybe? Lack of giving a damn? Hope in the future this will be part of the discussion the next time a time bomb like this is permitted to be built. This should not have ever happened!!
