the explosion is front and center over the existing fire.

there is a flash from the left side immediately prior to kaboom.

that's what I'm seeing anyways.

Heard on the scanner people from union pacific are trying to contact proper people to notify them that 200,000lbs of anhydrous was delivered to that plant this morning.

That's scary.
I also heard mentioned that had grain dust stored there? I think that is odd (unless they use it in the making of fertilizer). It's fairly common knowledge in farming communities that grain elevators need ventilation otherwise they can go, too.

This is incredibly sad. I am listening/watching one of the live links provided earlier in the thread. I am impressed by how strong everyone down there is, some of them have lost friends, neighbors, pets, etc and although they are grieving they are still doing what they can to help.
Lots of heartfelt prayers for everyone involved.

I live about 40 miles away from the explosion and we could feel it here. It sounded like thunder but we thought it might be an earthquake at first due to the way it shook our house.

I was in West a few weeks ago. It's just a small country town near Waco, I doubt it was anything more than an accident.

I created this GIF for ease of analysis of the explosion.
I am curious about the bright flash of light before the fire and the brimstone so to speak.. (this is just a figure of speech)

You can notice it clear as day in this video. and if you can pause it at the right time near 0:11. you can see the explosion to the left visibly, and start a miliseconds before the HUGE blast. i can get a screenshot uploaded of it if needed.

click this, and on the far left side you can see the First blast. Looks to be about 2x as high as the fire in the (main?) building. And about just as wide(from my opinion). so this was no small one either. it was significant enough to blow whatever was in that main building up.

No, you're right. I can see the flames meeting in the air, right before the explosion.

Geez. I cringe every time CNN goes to their breaking news montage. Between this and Boston, I'm a bit edgy.

I wouldn't be surprise now. Because of all the explosions and fire. What is different here than Boston. Is that rescue crews arrived much more quickly. Tonight it is a different story.

It does come from the left side. The origination of the blast looks like it is away from the main fire. I can't tell if a smaller explosion ignited a bigger one or what. There seems to be a bigger fireball to the right of the plant after the initial explosion.

From D.L. Wilson, Texas Dept of Public Safety (conference aired on CNN)

50-75 houses damaged
an apartment building is left as a skeleton
they have all the help they need
all the injured are being tended to
the mayor will speak tomorrow morning and they will have the number of fatalities at that time.

Can anyone explain this in layman's terms? What are we looking at here?

I wouldn't be surprise if they announce hundreds are dead and/or missing. Imagine trying eat dinner or sleep. Then this happens and you have run for your lives.
