you do realise that we are all in different time zones and that this site is not based on content just for you?

also each post is time/date stamped.

your post and this post were really not needed.

So much better than media entertainment. People are morons.
Get over it
My question is how do let people know about this dilemma, and we need all attention on this now

Hi OP thank you for asking the question, from it you have gained some knowledge. Please excuse our fellow ATSers who have put you down for asking what it is, but because they themselves obviously have knowledge of everything in the universe, how all things in nature behave does not make it a dumb question or you a dumb person.

Keep asking those questions.

S&F Jamjar! And yet with all their knowledge it would seem that kindness and understanding that not everyone knows everything didn't seem to work into their replies. Nothing wrong with not knowing, they came here and asked.. educating oneself is a good thing no?!

My time is about as valuable as single drop of water in an ocean. ..You very obviously missed the point...

Next year some one will see this thread, look outside and say "...hmmm...wha....it's daylight out?"

Sometimes...specifics matter...in the longrun

PS and a SEARCH here wouldve showed we discussed this ring several weeks back...

Obviously I do

Still...tell me...what country, time zone, and in which members home country are we speaking? And later this week? Next week? And a midnight shift a member may be working ate and gets a minute to read...walks out and...?.

Not you nor everyone perhaps...but as these threads last forever....this is one lacking any long term specifics...and was a done deal the second after it was posted.

Thats as bad as a thread saying "Quick! Turn on your television right now!" What channel, time zone, provider or country???? P-L-E-A-S-E.

And for the member reading not at the time of post, not in the same month or day...honestly. Specifics...knowing these threads stay in their categories forever...specifics do matter...really...it distinguishes the efforts of the OP.

Neither the 'When' nor the 'Where' actually matters since this is nothing out of the ordinary. Under the right conditions, it can be seen from anywhere on the Planet. It can be seen in the daytime, circling the Sun. It can also be seen during the night, circling the Moon.

All that is truly needed in order to understand what it is, is the 'Why' & the 'How'.

IF it was something special, then yeah, the 'When' and the 'Where' could be relevant, but it's not, so they're not.

What has actually been accomplished within the part of this discussion that you have started, and with the replies which it has received? Talk about irrelevance.

5 years from now, what benefit will be gained by someone reading this post of mine, and all of your posts in this thread, and a few others? Not a dam thing. lol. Congratulations. Well done, chap.

Great. Thank you very much for your astute interpretation of the absence of pertinent "who, what, when, where and how"...we learned in school. Perhaps you dont remember the basis for effective writing. And all that would help this thread to be relevant in 5 days, 5 weeks, 5 years or 50.

I also try to avoid anything "BREAKING!!!" or "HAPPPENING RIGHT NOW!!!" or "MUST READ!!!" or !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As though the OP's are news reporters....after things initial posts...it is no longer "BREAKING!!!" (not anymore)or "HAPPPENING RIGHT NOW!!!"(happened already) or "MUST READ!!!" (really? WHY do you think I MUST read it?) or !!!!!!!!!!!!!! (and all caps in a thread title...its just shouting)

Its just a point...that falls on your deaf ears...thats ok. I understand that you ...dont.
Thanks again...best MS

Not at all. I understand your point, and would usually agree. However, I just feel that in this particular situation, that point is being wasted on a pointless discussion.[color=878787](Which I am also guilty of continuing..... obviously)

I am in complete agreement with that. Especially the titles containing 'MUST READ!!!'. I never even open those. It's annoying to see them up on the 'New Hot Current Active Topics' or whatever..... Personally, what bugs me the most about those types of titles, is that they rarely provide any actual information regarding what the hell the actual topic is.

You'd think with life experiences and at least the internet there would be more intelligence than this.

On a more serious note with other stuff, it seems that ATS has attracted people who have regressed to the middle ages in fear and misunderstanding and weirdness...and that is in spite of the internet which can provide information in a second.

We are going backwards

Or the much less over dramatic explanation is that the OP simply had never seen a sun halo before and just got it confused with what they thought was a eclipse. Not everyone knows everything and maybe they came 'here' on the internet to get said information rather than a search engine. Nothing wrong with not knowing something and now the OP knows/is educated on the matter. So now the OP is moving forward, not backwards because they have been educated on the matter. One person hardly represents all.

I remember seeing a sun halo for the first time, freaked me out a bit because I didn't know what it was. I found out by asking someone, not running to google. I asked my husband and thank god the nerd didn't laugh or be mean about it because I simply didn't know something. If you are referring to the OP saying they heard it was 'evil', that doesn't mean they believe it, just that they heard it said.

Agree with you. Nothing wrong with OP not recognizing a sun dog. I tell ya, I posted pics on previous page in this thread of the one halo around the sun I saw a couple of weeks ago, and I couldn't stop looking at it for about a half hour and many spots in my vision later. Good thing I was wearing my shades.I don't recall seeing one before, so they aren't that common and very cool to see. I've seen a few moon rings, but this was my first sun ring.

Halos are actually very common, but there are reasons why most people don't see them often. Much like meteors and fireballs, people don't spend time looking for them, or recognize the conditions that give rise to them. Also, most halos are faint and not very eye-catching, and more often than not you only see fragments rather than a complete halo round the Sun. Yesterday and the day before I saw partial 22º halos round the Sun, but they were not as strong as the halo in the OP's footage.

I do spend quite a lot of time outdoors, and I'm constantly glancing upwards, so it's no surprise that I see them more than most. Seeing halos, sundogs, arcs and other phenomena is easy if you spend the time looking.

Here is a selection of halos and arcs that I photographed a couple of years back when my partner and I used to actively hunt for them:

Here's a nice sundog. Note the faint vertical section of 22º halo that is just visible mainly above the sundog. Sundogs are often seen at the same time as 22º halos.

Taken from the same location and during the same display as the photograph above, but slightly earlier on, here are some partial sundog/halo fragments.

Partially obscured sundog.

Here's another shot taken during the same display as the image above.

Not a sundog or a rainbow, but an unusually bright circumzenithal arc display.

Just to prove my point, here's a shot of a faint partial 22º halo I took earlier today - that's 3 out of the last 4 days that I've seen a 22º halo around the Sun.

It's hard to see in the photo, but it was even fainter when I observed it with my eyes. I used a circular polarizer to help bring it out. Sunglasses work in the same way, and are useful for observing faint halos and arcs.

It's pretty much what I was thinking reading over some of these replies.

Arolexion simply didn't know about halos, and now he does! I do have to admit that his presentation was lacking in certain areas... using b4 instead of "before" and the general lack of information, pictures or video.

We are all on ATS to learn, whether it be about halos or how to create better threads
