Prison Population Per Capita
USA: 716 per 100,000 people
Australia: 129 per 100,000 people

Times change--I think from the above metric it is far more apt to call the USA the prison state

Yeah...he reminds me of a lot of Aussie posters who kicked the bucket for no apparent reason.
I do know who you are talking about, but i will not divulge his name. The fact is that a lot of Aussies share the OP's sentiments, and such ideologies are volatile on ATS, because ATS is an American website.
The truth is that some of the Americans here cannot take these things lightly. A lot of you skitz out...edit on 30-3-2013 by daaskapital because: sp

This is something foreigners, and indeed Americans, need to understand!

You're right. We don't take these things lightly because they're so hilarious. The idea of Australia---the prison state----ruling the world or economy is just so hilarious. We like you guys, we WANT to like you guys, we have blockbusters when you dress up in crocskin hats and tell us "that's not a knife; THIS is a knife." But we laugh our @sses off when you say you're going to "rule" anything. Because we would have loved to have that "ruling" attitude when we were saving the world from WW2.
ETA: my apologies if you're not Australian. I direct that to Australians who share the sentiment.edit on 30-3-2013 by 00nunya00 because: (no reason given)

Yes, we do: because it means we have made a profitable business out of imprisoning our own modern Americans for mostly non-violent offenses. Not that we were literally founded on the genes of violent offenders and the prostitutes that were sent there to keep them from rowing back.edit on 31-3-2013 by 00nunya00 because: (no reason given)edit on 31-3-2013 by 00nunya00 because: (no reason given)
Sure, imprisoning Americans (and more lucratively, illegal immigrants) is profitable; at least we weren't literally the place where Great Britain sent its most violent offenders for life imprisonment.
It seems certain that among the felons sent to New England,
by far the largest element was made up of prisoners taken in
battle. A letter from Rev. John Cotton to Cromwell, dated Bos-
ton, July 28, i65I , states that "sundry Scots taken by him at
Dunbar, September 2, I650, had arrived there and been sold, not
for slaves to perpetual servitude, but for six or seven or eight
years," etc.

Pretty much all of the major British colonies were sent prisoners. The USA is no exclusion.
Did you know that if it weren't for American interference in Australia, we would be a powerful nation? For example: The CIA were instrumental in the removal of Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. The USA also made sure that Australia couldn't get Nuclear Weapons.
The truth is, we would have been a powerful state, so long as the USA never intervened. Now with the economy turning to the Pacific, we have the USA begging us to help them, and give them ample opportunity to have a say in our, and Asian Pacific affairs. I guarantee that is Australia dropped a lot of the cooperation we share currently, we will grow more prosperous and powerful as a nation.
Further, the USA never saved the world in WW2. You's entered half way through the war, when the enemies were weakened. You's barely lifted your fingers inthe Pacific (because your soldiers were so undertrained)...
Every single ally helped "save the world," not just the USA.

Why do I get the feeling that your not even Australian? Or at least not even born in Australia? Tell me, whats with all the fifty-cent party posts regarding Australia joining China? Oh and btw, culturally Australia is far more European than Asian, and geographically, the land down under is alternatively considered part of the south pacific, or a part of "Oceania", so no, Australia is not an "Asian" country. Seriously, I understand some anti-Americanism coming from Australia, but do you really expect us to believe that your all a bunch of anti-Western socialists just pining to become part of China? Thats just plain ridiculous.edit on 31-3-2013 by Antonio1 because: (no reason given)

Indeed, it was the USA's interference which halted our advancement:

LOL, keep listening to Eddie Izzard and your other tranny comedians for your history. We laugh at the fail.
