Staff applause?

Every now and then I get a staff applause PM giving me 500 points my question is

Who gives the applause? Mods?
500 points what are they and what can I spend them on

PS I think you should tell us which member of staff gave you the applause.

The points are just pretty numbers, then don't do anything. As for who gave you the applause - the message you receive should say...

A member of the ATS staff ________ has applauded your.....

I get an Applause message from time to time, and they normally come in the form "A member of the forum staff, JOHNSMITH...", showing who gave the Applause and for what thread.
So did you read the message?
As for where you spend the points...Currently in suspense.

There's an ATS store, but you can't use the points to get anything. That's at least something. Oh and don't ask me for the URL because I lost track of it when I switched from Windows to Linux.

You can print each point out individually onto bits of paper and then fill the bath with them and roll around laughing maniacally.

Well, why can't the owners of the store just lie? For example: A large ATS coffee mug goes for $11.99. Just add that it costs $11.99 and 300 stars.

Also can we see how many points we have I can't find it and is there a leaderboard?

Sounds like a money LOSING venture to me..

Prior to joining staff, I appreciated applause, because it was an indication that the 'folks that read everything' liked or thought my post was funny.

Since joining staff, applause is far more infrequent, but just as appreciated. I think it's a good thing to have your peers give you props. I know that I really enjoy giving applause for a well-crafted, thoughtful or extremely funny post. I don't have to agree with the post, and I know most-if-not-all of staff feels the same.
