I worked in a local power station once as a cleaner. Can you imagine my surprise on my first evening when I went to the board room to hoover and dust ... In the middle of this huge oblong table was piles of UFO magerzines all neatly placed in the middle... nothing else, no newspapers, nothing. I flicked through them and they were all in date order.
The other cleaner I was working with was cleaning on another floor. She was a bit of a grump and I didn't want to upset her, so I carried on cleaning and then went up to the next designated floor, which was offices. Again my eyes nearly popped out of my head as on the chief technicians desk was more of them. Not old and tatty, they, like the ones downstairs were in mint condition.
From what I could make out the power station had had a mention as they had found something odd on the river bed where they suck the water in. There had been numerous sitings about the power station too.

Maybe they heard disclosure is near, so they closed up shop, since no one will dispute the existence of UFO's afterwards.
They would no longer have any reason to be,

Or they knew they were flogging a dead horse and took of with the suckers sorry victims money

Probably the correct answer.
The sign for them was most likely falling subscriptions.

First of all I must point out that I have never bought or read the publication in question. However, there are some things I wish to say having read the segment posted by the OP.

The magazine is described as having a concentration on subjects related to ufo, the extra terrestrial hypothesis (good so far) and other "fortean" subjects (uh oh!). Well, those fortean subjects can go hang, and have no right being in the same publication as the subject of UFO or alien intelligence.

Lets be clear about this. As long as UFOlogy allies itself, for any reason, or is published alongside the contemptable waffle of paranormalists, necromancers, and spiritualists, it should expect to recieve NO genuine interest or support from internationally acclaimed scientists, government figures, or indeed anyone who is capable of reason. The continuing link between UFOlogy and general paranormal gubbins, is TOXIC for its validity, and ought to be terminated at the earliest oppertunity, lest the entire area of research into UFO and extraterrestrial intelligence be bought down by its association with lesser areas of study.

Now, all of that aside, the owners of the publication in question are in significant danger here. If they have been taking funds for subscription from the readers, but have failed to actually produce an issue for an extended period, they might be forced to agree to refund some subscribers, and worse, they may get taken to court for some sort of fraud, if it can be proved that payments were taken by them, when they in fact had no intention of publishing more issues.

Something is deeply off about this, and I feel, from the sound of the way things have progressed in this matter, that the second option is the more likely here. I think the subscribers should get together and form a civil action against the owners of UFO magazine, and I also think that there ought to be a criminal investigation of the owners, to cover the possibility that all of this is one big scam.

The U.S. government disclosed two years ago that they had no evidence of alien life or civilizations. What more does anyone want?

Why would the U.S. government tell you they had evidence of alien life if they wanted to keep it a secret?

Wouldn't they still want to report on what people are saying they are seeing?

Why? It's always the same old crap that eventually leads to exactly nowhere with no information of any value. Might as well just print descriptions of people's dreams, because it's worth pretty much the same. Namely, nothing.

UFO Magazine is dead because the UFO field is dead with nothing being determined in over 70 years of reasonably enthusiastic study.

Then why are you here reading this stuff and taking up our time?

Wasn't UFO Hunters exposed as disinformation program, thus no one is interested in buying from the good ol' Bill Burns

The following is my opinion as a member participating in this discussion.

Like anything else ufological, the death of the magazine has nothing to do with UFOs and more to do with real life.

Across the west, magazine sales have been falling steadily and even top sellers have been losing sales at over 30%. There's almost nothing in these magazines that we can't find elsewhere (or free) on the internet. As such, magazines have increased their pages of adverts, compromised any quality and tanked the market.

For the UFO market, by the time UFO magazine publishes a piece of news, ATS and other sites have discussed it, nailed it and moved on to something else. It's also interactivity that's helping to kill mag sales.

As for UFO zines and mags in general? The longest-running was put to bed (Saucer Smear) when Jim Moseley passed recently. Dozens have come and gone since the 50s and it wasn't so much the UFO activity to blame as the fact that people can only read so much about Roswell and the same old, same old stuff.

No doubt there are some great articles being published, but they're sandwiched between lots of yawns and fricken adverts. And that's every magazine out there!

So I reckon the mag industry is on it's ass for the same reasons the music industry has suffered - the internet is better.

As an ATS Staff Member, I will not moderate in threads such as this where I have participated as a member.

I wonder if the magazine was any better when Don Ecker owned it. The Birnes need to get rid of the mag, the name is too good not to have somebody good running it. But oh yeah, they copyrighted the name. Which tells you all you need to know about what their intentions in the UFO filed were to begin with.

That's a good question. Boredom, I guess. Maybe a tiny bit of hope left over from my 10-year-old self that someday somebody might figure this stuff out. But over the years I've become as much of an expert as anybody, and I've come to the conclusion that if there is something to be figured out here, we as human beings just don't have the brainpower to do it. We can pat ourselves on the back for being relatively smart compared to fish or beavers. But what if intelligence is like earthquakes, and there's really no upper limit? What if we needed to be 10 times as smart as we are now to figure it out? In that case, it's hopeless.

c'mon, NEWSWEEK magazine shut down, and they had a hell of alot more readers, and were more mainstream than UFO mag. paper is out, except for important legal documents. we'll be attaching electrodes to our brains pretty soon, that will allow exchange of information directly to others, and data banks. get your tricorders ready

All of these explanations and reasonings, worthy and accurate as they may be, can't ignore the simple fact:

TAKING OTHER PEOPLE'S MONEY IN EXCHANGE FOR GOODS NEVER DELIVERED IS FRAUD!!!

It is unethical, illegal, and gives the entire UFO movement a black eye. I never really gave much credibility to 'ole Bill Birnes on UFO Hunters anyway - he was always the guy who saw aliens and UFOs in everything the show encountered. And his wife as "editor" of their family rag - that just stinks of nepotism.

Do the right thing, Bill (and your hiatus editor-spouse): Admit the rag is dead will not be resurrected, return the subscription money to your faithful, but oh-so-duped followers, and put those stupid johnny-pilot sunglasses and bomber jacket back on as you ride off into the sunset.

It was fun while it lasted, Billy-boy. But taking good folks' hard-earned money to pay your personal obligations while doing nothing, delivering nothing is the height of unscrupulous, low-blow thievery. Aren't you even the slightest bit ashamed of yourselves? Pity. Even we're feeling ashamed just to have been associated with you...

Hi,

i think with the digital age and case in point with this site lol, that alot of publications esp on the topic of ufo's and the like were always probably going to die a death in the end or certainly struggle.

i mean why pay for a magazine when you can get all the info and some online for nothing.

Regards...

It's ironic, that the popularity of Above Top Secret is one of the reasons for the misfortune of UFO Magazine... And, that the magazines demise is a topic on Above Top Secret. It's like knocking out your competitor and then stealing his wallet while he's unconscious.

Actually, Above Top Secret had a column in UFO Magazine. I wonder who wrote it, the byline was merely, "AboveTopSecret"

Somebody from UFO Magazine scrubbed the above linked wikipedia article. They have put up an "issue" of the magazine that is free at the website: UFO Magazine free eZine Nancy Birnes confronts the wiki article which has now been scrubbed (page 14). This eZine claims that they will putting out a print version... "soon". Oh and they are still shilling for new subscriptions.

Not to mention that this eZine has many, many ads for Bill Birnes new book. Why have a pdf version of your magazine. Just present the material in website format. They can also pull what the queen of hucksters pull and just charge people to look at your website. Either way you are being taken.

That, plus the fact that plenty of people will not pay for something that is available for no cost elsewhere.
