Bacteria on Mars

Anyone have any information on this, I know some things about it such as:

1) They DID find bacteria except they were dead

2) The bacteria resembled that of Earth's origin bacteria, (could this suggest that Mars was starting to form life?)

3) An asteroid hit Mars a long time ago and it possibly could have destroyed all life on Mars

If there is anything I missed I would like your input/suggestions/theories thanks

How bout how can they be sure what they did find wasn't contamination from Earth or the upper atmosphere?
