Ok heres the story.

Im an Athiest my best friend is a Christian. A while back he started telling me that he couldnt understand how I managed to stay sane, be a good person and all and all live my life. He continued to tell me that if he was an Athiest (and he was at 1 point in time) he would become a raging psychopath and probably kill himself because life would have no meaning and there would be no consequences to his actions.

Now personally I dont understand how he can arrive at this. Anyone else feel this way? Id appreaciate answers from both sides on this as he's left me dumbfounded.

Thx I saw that post and agree with you and then some. Clearly God does not stand in between sanity and lunacy or I wouldnt be the person I am. How could I get this across?

I've never understood this logic - why does a belief in god give you the greater in-road to morality or conscience?

As a doubting Thomas I put a huge importance on the sanctity of life mainly because I doubt that there is anything once it's gone. I don't go to bed each night thinking that I will, one day, be united with the people I have lost.

More importantly if the only reason someone is "being good" is because they fear eternal damnation what does that say about the person to begin with?

This not meant to reflect an opinion on your friend - just random thoughts. Are you sure he's not playing devils advocate - no pun intended - challenging your own ideas?
