Someone clearly buys into the Two-Party "Us vs. Them" nonsense.

I can see the connotation and why some would see it as "racist" but mostly just see a poorly made attempt in some logic. Just connecting two people doesn't mean it is the cause or that McConnell himself will do the bidding of his wife.

This type of hit-and-run quips will only increase due to new media and information dissemination; by both sides that prove they are aiming for the lowest information voters in their aisles.

Sure, I call people out and get offended over racist comments. We're supposed to progressing as a society, not staying stagnant in our old system of hurtful labels.

But I don't think in this case it was racist. Was it poorly thought out? Yes ... I think whomever tweeted it should have thought a little bit more about the perception it *might* generate.

I love this everyone calls racism over every little thing yet they dont even understand what the word implies. Seriously if you want to use a word excessively at least look up the meaning. A belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. There is your definition now does that post meet the criteria. Honestly I would edit your post to say people over react and use the race card to much.

I think the problem is people just read what they want to read, stuff that agrees with their own delusions and they read the same things over and over only this does not give the full picture. It is like reading "The Wizard of Oz" repeatedly, sure you will get something out of it the first few times but after a few thousand? People see what they want to see.

There is an element of what the OP termed as being leftist that holds people back, for that matter some books that have been written makes me weep for the trees that were sacrificed.

If the shoe was on the other political foot, so to speak, and this tweet was made by a conservative PAC. Not only would the Dems be crying racism as well, but it would get a whole Piers Morgan show devoted to the racism of the "Right" in this country.

I don't see this as any different than the Dems screaming racism anytime someone on the "Right" criticizes Obama or his policies, regardless of their intentions. Anyone that says otherwise is being intellectually dishonest.

I personally don't see racism, IF big if, it is because of her former position. However, the tweet doesn't say that and the connotation is clear. They could have said overseas, or India, or . . . anything else. So, if the "Left" can cry foul over Obama's criticism, despite what is actually said or intended . . . what's good for the goose.

S&F for you Kali!

So for you two wrongs make a right? Or you live by the philosophy that to oppose someone you disagree with then you adopt their methods? Hate to break it to you but that makes you just like them. If it's repulsive when the Left allegedly sees racism every time Obama is criticized (which by the way isn't true in the least bit) then how can you endorse when the Right does the same thing? That's the ultimate in hypocrisy.

Or we can take this moment to recognize that regardless of our leanings, this type of political sophistry is not helping anyone except drive a wedge further between common people? Sure we can sit here for pages and pages going back and forth at how this side does that, this side does this, but in the end, it is when the people from either side of the aisle stand up and say enough and knock if off. Ah to dream....

I don't subscribe to either side's platform . . . And think they are both hypocritical 100% of the time. However, I see nothing in the tweet posted that says this is because of her postition with Bush. It says "This woman, his wife, reason for move to China". As I said, it says what it needs to without coming out and saying it . . . the connotation is clear.

Also . . . if you don't think the left (mostly media types) consistantly brings up Racism about any misgivings people have for Obama, then you haven't been paying much attention since the 2008 election.

As I said . . . I don't like either side, so you can drop the "you" as I don't wear that red shirt. And expect 100% hypocrisy on every issue. So, it seems par for the course, to me.

I suppose labelling the comment as originating from a 'liberal super PAC' makes it sound more interesting but racist it's not. I feel using this as some form of political scoring point is ludicrous and very inappropriate.

On a side note, being sensitive to racism or even over sensitive to racism doesn't make anyone a racist obviously. I hate when lunacy logic is thrown around.

I agree . . . it drives a wedge and that is the intention. I don't have any control how those in Washington or the media act, so when I actually start seeing someone in either of those places act with dignity, respect, and in a cooperative manner . . . I'll jump on their bandwagon and start giving support. Until then, I'll keep my vote to local issues that actually have some influence over my daily life and continue to laugh at the theatre we call the federal government.

You dont see the racism yet make a post like you just did? So your argument is that one side does or may do it so the other side should too? Where are all these democrats "screaming racism anytime someone on the "Right" criticizes Obama"? That is an exaggeration and dont you think it is more important to be honest? After all it was lying and propaganda (same as lying) that got this civilization in the mess it is.

And what is with all these labels? Liberal, progressive, leftist and oh let us not forget socialist.

What a damn joke. I heard a professor call himself a socialist and i thought - YOU are a socialist? NO you want others to be socialist. This guy wouldnt give me ice in the winter and i am on the balls of my ass broke.

I still say we are reaping the whirlwind from the 60s mindset, 'cause all those so called liberals grew up, got older and put on their jack boots and brown shirts.

Because it's common knowledge she was the Secretary of Labor when tons of jobs were shipped to China.

As I said, it says what it needs to without coming out and saying it . . . the connotation is clear.

Only if you are overtly trying to find racism, which you keep accusing the Left of doing.

Also . . . if you don't think the left (mostly media types) consistantly brings up Racism about any misgivings people have for Obama, then you haven't been paying much attention since the 2008 election.

Not what I said. I won't defend a position I didn't take. Construct your strawmen elsewhere.

What I actually said I was dispute the claim that the Left always cries "Racism!!" every single time Obama is criticized for something.

As I said . . . I don't like either side, so you can drop the "you" as I don't wear that red shirt.

No, I won't drop it. You are the one I responded to and you are the one doing exactly this. You are sitting there saying, "Well the Left does it" as if that justifies the Right doing it. Instead you should come on here and say, "Both sides need to stop with this petty Boy Who Cried Racist-Wolf crap!"

No but the tweet has her picture and implies that heritage has everything to do with jobs going to China when there's plenty of Americans ensuring that happens.

Just Trying to unpack this Kali...I went to your link at Progress where they have the tweet...

didn't see a pic in the tweet

This woman has the ear of @mcconnellpress — she’s his #wife.May explain why your job moved to #China! rense.com/general77/raci…

— Progress Kentucky (@ProgressKy) February 14, 2013

but the tweet had a link instead ...to this article?

I was quite stunned to read Parade magazine yesterday. In it, Labor Secretary Elaine Chao is quoted saying that American workers not only have bad attitudes and lousy work ethics, they also need to dress better and to have better personal hygiene. Let's be blunt -- Chao thinks American workers have bad body odor. On top of all that, Chao thinks that Americans need to take anger management classes!

rense.com...

which claims that Chao herself is a racist?

Not comming to conclusions and of course would find the tweet offensive if it was what you say it was...but help me get there first, cuz I can't see what you are seeing by the OP.

I don't think it's an exaggeration at all. I hear it all the time . . . whether pundits on shows, comments after articles on news sites, etc.

I was using the excepted "labels" that these people give themselves and their opponents.

All I said was that I don't see the difference between one side doing it or the other. I think it is comical that when the shoe is on the other foot . . . the other side is so "disgusted" by a tactic that they employ, as well.

If you want to get into a "what's wrong with society and American politics debate" have at. I was commenting on the headline and comment of the OP. Seems everybody else feels their opinion on this matter, and how well they articulate it within this thread, will have any impact on business in Washington or the media . . . I know it won't. I didn't come into the thread to win hearts and minds . . . if that is your mission in this thread have at it.

You'll have to find someone else to pick a fight with . . . not worth my time.

If it makes YOU feel any better, I won't comment on the absurdity of either side crying racism until the day both sides sit down and sing about enjoying a Coke together . . . just like those great commercials in the 70's!

YOU can keep tabs on that promise . . . starting . . . now!

I think that was a major exaggeration and some may see it as a crutch or card you pull out of your sleeve. To be honest, i think you are seeing and remembering what you want to see and remember.

The whole point is since the OP saw the words Chinese or China their radar went up and it (to them) was automatically racist, personally i think that is wrong. All it means is that the person is from China or of Chinese descent. Now how do we know who or what geographic locations we can discuss that will not be racist?

To be clear I think for the most part those of us Left of Right are pretty accurate when we call out racism, it is still a front runner in the list of what's wrong with the GOP and right wing media but just because we see ourselves as the good guys on the issue of racism doesn't mean it doesn't exist within our ranks and it should be called out just as harshly. I admire Think Progress' stance with this article, the author of the tweet has made no effort to clarify anything other than to say 'it wasn't racist'. The connotation was there and it shouldn't have been.

ETA Is there an ATS club for people who have managed to piss off Conservatives and Liberals?

Not picking a fight. I was pointing out your hypocrisy. If it's "not worth your time" then why are you even on this thread? I seriously don't get it.

Funny how you, though, have to try and falsely claim I'm picking a fight just because I objected to something that you said in your initial response.

But whatever. It's not worth your time, then it's not worth my time responding to you any further.

The statements she made according to that Rense article sounds like typical GOP rhetoric to me, to excuse the inexcusable you must demonize the people you're screwing over.
