They are merely recognizing the power I WILL have.

To be honest, if a situation presented itself, I would assume A wondering person, even with evil intent in their heart, would be swayed not to follow through with a whole community around. Even if they did, I refuse to play the role of the cold hearted individual because times were hard. If we do not have compassion, what do we have? I would rather die than to treat my fellow human beings as cattle ready for the slaughter.

lol

That's very noble.

Can't say i would be as welcoming, if only because I know my own nature. Not being cold-hearted, myself, but cautious and overly distrustful of others' motives, especially in such odd circumstances.

Yes, that's very noble, quite righteous, and extremely unselfish of you.

And that's why you'd probably not survive. But still "win," by being a decent person to death.

I believe that quite a few people do NOT have a plan and will "bug out" and hope the best. However, even though I live in the city, I grew up in the country with a lot of family around where I will be going. Yes, as a lone individual, I would be doomed to fail, but with an active community around, it may not be as easy. I will always believe that communal survival will outweigh lone survival, as such, I believe that once someone is introduced into a community that will help and accept, that alone will be enough to sway the human nature of lone survival.

Right now I REALLY want to quote the Hangover.... Hell... okay...

You guys might not know this but I consider myself a bit of a loner. I tend to think of myself as a one man wolf pack. But when my sister brought Doug home, I knew he was one of my own. And my wolf pack, it grew by one. So there… there was two of us in the wolf pack. I was alone first in the pack and Doug joined in later. And six months ago, when Doug introduced me to you guys I thought “wait a second, could it be?” And now I know for sure, I just added two more guys to my wolf pack. Four of us wolves, running around the desert together in Las Vegas, looking for strippers and coc aine.”

I believe our country is more than the "screw you I'll kill you and take what you had" mentality and in times of desperation, would pull together and strive to make a better place.

I agree. I think people watch too much TV, and too many dystopian, post-apocalyptic movies. Sure, one could argue that people aren't as nice as they "used to be", but I don't buy that. We are still human, and the majority of people will still choose compassion over insta-murder, IMO. Those whom are smart and skilled enough to establish a self-sustaining community would also realize a non-threatening situation from a threatening one, or at least know how to discern the two safely. Also, there must be an amount of goodne ss and compassion in someone if they are part of a community in the first place.

I agree, but even those that have no obvious skills in our modern society, will learn what they have to offer. Those that have absolutely no skill can always weed a garden, post as watch, harvest crops, etc. There can always be room for people that pull their own weight.

However, Keyboard-Rambo will disagree and say they will kill everyone because they are amazing at Call of Duty.... Kids today....

Agreed. A well structured, prepared community will be ready to defend itself. Even if a rag-tag, nomadic group encroached the farm, for one the group would be insane to attack; second, they would probably be weak and starving. A confrontation with the group would allow the community leaders to discern whether or not the group is hostile, what are their problems, and what the options are in relation to needs, ability, and necessity.

Is everyone mental?

Name ONE instance were things went to Thunderdome when the prevailing government collapsed (not even Somalia can claim this, it took years of civil war and there are authorities in the country that are a government). Collapse follows two things: decentralization and restructuring of old authorities into new ones [different clown, same circus].

When Rome collapsed the empire fragmented (decentralized) and Rome was replaced by whatever guy could lay out the coin for the most swords (restructuring).

The Soviets broke apart, new governments formed. Life goes on.

The bozo in the other thread will probably be arrested and beaten to death by the new government as an example to the others. Seeing his bloody and broken body on public display will let the people know the King is serious and the riot will be averted.

aren't there pirates out on the open seas right now, and you would have to come ashore eventually to restock on tequila ans sunscreen

Well, no doubt, a wilderness expert could survive out in the woods, sleeping in a cobbled shelter, eating berries, tree bark, and wild game....

Or, you could be part of a community that had specialists vs. one jack of all trades, assigned tasks, and mutual protection.

When the roving gangs come around, sure, the woodsman can retreat to the safety of the forest, but I'd much rather be part of a more secure community, where I can sleep with confidence. Even Rambo could easily be killed by a 12 year old with a knife, if he was sleeping.
