Never before has a woman won a NASCAR pole, until now, Danica Patrick won the pole for the 2013 Daytona 500, really cool! Can she do the ultimate in the crown jewel of racing and win the big race (worth 5 million) and beat 42 of the best drivers on the planet? I would like to see her do this as it has never been done by a female. It would change the sport as we know it. Go Danica!

And she's the poster girl for GoDaddy as well.

Looks great in Green!

There's a joke in there somewhere about a woman sitting on the pole.

On a more serious note, congratulations to her and her crew. It's no small task to be the leader of the pack of the most skilled drivers in stock car racing.

There are various points for who is the best drivers, but she got the heavier full body stock cars down pretty good now, Daytona is a track where you have to handle good and run wide open, you slow down by lightly dragging the brakes, not lifting off the throttle so you are flat out while green conditions exist. She has the car for the task, it will be tough, even for the best it is no cake walk, some drivers run a whole career and never win this race as it is so illusive. Some say she won't make half the race, I would like to see her win the darn thing.

I hope she does win just to be the first female to do so!
It's always neat being able to see someone make the history books so I will definitely keep my eye on this.

Good on her.

And DAMN, she is spicy....Didn't even realise (An Aussie who doesn't watch American motorsports...although I'm sure too now)

It's a real pity, here she is making pole position in the most famous NASCAR race of them all, and all I want to see is her....ummm.....body.....

What a terribly materialistic world we live in.

She'll come in behind Dixon this time. But pole position is good for a woman. (Oops just released what that could mean...but it doesnt. )

If she wins I don't think it will "change the sport as we know it", and I damn sure hope it doesn't, but I'm pulling for her to run a good race and would love to see her win. This week or any week. I think she's a good driver and has definitely made steady progress. The super speedways play to her strengths and I'm not surprised she finally picked up a pole. Winning a race is a much tougher accomplishment.

I have almost started NASCAR forums on threads on here, and for this I started to write one and figured "Who on here has ever talked about NASCAR, I will get made fun of" well.... f it. Danica has been running very fast, holding the fastest speeds/times at Daytona all testing season in the new Gen 6 car, and I think she has what it takes to be the fastest in 500 miles of Daytona, but.... Daytona is a beast of its own kind. 4 time Johnson wrecks 100 yards into lap 2 last year. Juan Pablo hits a jet dryer during a caution when his cars suspension broke at a pace speed. Gordon flips a few times in the Bud Shootout and walks away laughing. This year the Sprint Unlimited took out quite a few good drivers on lap 15. It isn't about being fast at Daytona (however it is about being fast! its Daytona!) it is all about playing a complex and very consistent game. Anything can happen at any time, and if you can be aware of the cars around you and aware of you own car, along with drafting skills and keeping calm, you can make moves and be patient, ride along, fall back, and get up there at the end in 1 piece, then you and at least 10 other guys/girl have a shot in the last 5 laps. She hasn't done well at Daytona in Sprint Cup yet, crashing out in both races. Not totally her fault, but I feel like she doesn't read the field as some of the others do. Either because of her being a female and having a natural tendency to hesitate a potentially risky move, and then ends up messing up. Also she could be just new to the game, this year she has much more confidence and is dating Ricky Stenhouse Jr. (2 time winner of nationwide Series the past 2 seasons, and is competing against her for Rookie of the year title in Sprint Cup.) She finished 10th overall last season in Nationwide Series.

I wish her luck and hope she is in the chase for a Daytona win at the end, but Gordon is my guy, since I was a kid. He starts beside Patrick on the front row, so I am going to have to hope she gets runner up!

ummm it's not "materialistic" rather
misogynistic is a MUCH better description of what exactly is going on here, just had to correct you.
Materialistic has to do with monetary value, however misogynistic has to do with the HATRED OF WOMEN

I wouldn't call diving around in an endless circle "the best drivers in the world" I have greater challenges on my way to work everyday.
Can a woman win it ? Yeah why not ? Mrs C drives me around the bend sometimes at more than 200 mph

Seriously I can't see why gender is an issue for driving when all you have to do is keep your foot down and your steering wheel true.

Yaun Pablo Montoya and Nigel Mansell both left F1 and won nascar in their rookie years, what does that tell you about who are the best drivers in the world ?

And how many have they won compared to Jeff Gordon, Matt Kenseth, Tony Stewart, Richard Petty, Dale Earnhardt, Kyle Busch, etc.

FFS guys, she's a woman, not a chimpanzee. Women drive cars too.

Best drivers on the planet? I sincerely hope you're joking. Watch this and then tell me that you think driving in a circle takes skill.

I knew OP would catch flak for the "42 of the best drivers on the planet" remark.

OP is right though. Never said THE 42 best drivers on the planet, just 42 OF the best drivers.

I tried to help out by saying "the best drivers in stock car racing" because I knew some gearheads would come in here showing the most intense rally races and street courses. Those drivers are among the best on the planet too. No one said they weren't.

Forums: full of Pavlov's dogs.

I'm not into watching cars driving around in circles, but if she causes accidents while putting on make-up and talking on the cell phone, I am so there!

I don't really see it as such a big deal, it's driving a car, men and women are both capable. It's just something women aren't normally interested in but that one is.

I clicked on the thread because the only thing I could think of to fit the title was some woman somewhere had produced sperm or something. That was the only thing I could think of that a woman can't physically do

...by the same token, a man can't be pregnant, so it goes both ways.

of course just one single case anywhere, anytime of a teenage boy getting pregnant would completely wipe out the teen pregnancy problem

Back on topic, did you realize that NASCAR was created by the old moonshine runners? Both men and women were involved in the production of moonshine, so I see no reason why women were left out of the NASCAR business other than their own lack of interest in being involved.

No, but I don't hate women, in fact I love them. I welcome them into every sport openly. I believe it is materialism because despite how good she is at racing all I wanted to see was how good looking she was....which I believe is a mentality set in materialism, and not misogynous.....

I could be wrong, but I definitely don't hate women, and it's not that I don't care about her racing...it's just that I care more about what she looked like.

I just want to say that having 60 or so less pounds in a vehicle tips the scales in her favor. When basically all things being equal in NASCAR (engine, tires, vehicle weight) being a woman should give her quite the advantage. I know that was the argument against her in Indy when she first started.

Kudos to her. She can be ranked among the top 42 of the best American drivers on an oval track. I'm more along the lines of the best drivers in the world belong either to rally or more than likely F1. I really hope F1 starts taking off in America again, and we get more than 1 race. Doing 200 mph and making a left turn doesn't qualify, in my books, as having skill. Doing 200 mph and braking to 60 mph to make a blind turn with 3 G's of force acting on you, then accelerating to 150 mph to make a slow turn in the opposite direction with an engine that purrs at 16,000 rpm is where it's at.....Sorry, missing my F1. Less than a month til it kicks off in Australia!
