Obama Tears Up Awarding 6 Slain Newtown teachers with Presidential Citizens Medal

In examining the list of past Presidential Citizens Medal recipients (see Wikipedia link in the above post), something about this screams politicizing and exploiting a tragedy. Why did the children get snubbed from this award considering the teachers awarded are deceased. So if you get killed while doing your job you are bestowed the second highest civilian award in the United States?

For background, the award recognizes individuals "who [have] performed exemplary deeds or services for his or her country or fellow citizens." The award is only eligible to United States citizens, and may be awarded posthumously.

I am sorry if I do not sound compassionate; believe me I am sorry these people were killed but I just feel like their memories are being exploited in a Weekend at Bernie's-like way...

For reference: While I didn't vote for either major Presidential candidate, my believes are closer to Obama's than they are to Romney's. I mention this because I do not want this to be an Obama bashing thread, but an actual discussion of how people feel about today's awards

Since Obama continues to classify the Fort Hood terrorist attack by an extremist Muslim as nothing more than 'workplace violence', then I think that those who got shot at Fort Hood should receive these 'Presidential Citizens Medals' as well. Afterall, those soldiers were citizens too ....

Honestly, I think that if you look at the criteria for the Presidential Citizens Medal that the Fort Hood victims would better meet the criteria. Would you agree?

Of course its political, that's part of the Presidents job, to help the nation heal after a tragedy.

Giving out this award lets the families know that our government recognizes what happens and is aware of the sacrifice these people made.

Whether they actually did anything to earn it is beside the point. Its a gesture to help the healing process.

I understand what you are saying, but I keep thinking back to the Fall of 2012 when politicians from both parties who voiced questions, concerns and outrage about Benghazi (the first time since 1979 that a US Ambassador was killed in the line of duty in Benghazi) were vilified for politicizing a tragedy.

Simple answer.

Benghazi happened overseas in a hostile area with a government employee.

This happened at a school with children. Putting aside all relevant issues, one tugs at the heartstrings more than the other does.

May not be right but it is the way it is.

So Obama teard up did he?

side note:
as I understand it the fort hood survivors are trying to get reclassified as battlefield casualties not workplace casualties so they can get proper VA treatment and better pensions?

my IMHO is false flag vics like first responders, don't do so good in the system...

Because the media attention wouldn't be there...there isn't enough political capital to gain from it.

He's an opportunistic egomaniac. This tragedy has been the launch pad for his 2nd amendment attack. He's going to milk it for all its worth. It's sad that the families of the slain are being used in such a way.

Maybe they were trying to do what other adults were but didn't have the opportunity because they were shot. From your source:

Kinda like what people here are doing in reverse? If he had done nothing about this then the same people that are bashing him for this would then call him a "heartless bastard" and we all know it.

I read the list of people "on hand for the event". You understand that the individuals that were "on hand" whose efforts the day of the massacre the article notes who moved children from the school were NOT recognized with the Presidential Citizens Medal. So I'm not understanding how that example shows the individuals honored met the awards criteria?!?!?!

Again I urge you and others to take your love or hate for either party out of this thread and use logic and evidence.

So if you hate the President, pretend like a President you love did this.
If you love the President, think about how would you feel about this if a President you didn't enjoy did this.
