Meteorite Crashes in Russia

Ok, so I get up, hear the news and the first thing I do is log on to ATS to get the real story about what's happening. It's about impossible to read all 38 pages of posts; I made it through the first 4 1/2 pages then realized how long it was, so sorry if this has been discussed.

Been trying to figure out this thing's direction. From the dash-cam video it looks like the object is traveling from the north/ north-east toward the southwest. Basing this off of the rising sun in the video.

This may be unrelated but I was walking my dog late last evening, around midnight or later, and I saw a couple small meteors streak through the sky from a northerly direction. I'm not saying it's the same object, but wondered if they could be debris from the same object breaking up in Earth's gravity. I tried find more streaking through the sky, but it was partly cloudy, so I considered myself lucky to see what I saw, and made a wish- but that's not what I wished for!

Thoughts and prayers are with the Russian people.

not just to handle the injured, they,ll be there to maintain the infrastructure eg. engineers to survey damage and repair the citys systems etc

Makes you wonder doesn't it? If that thing really was only around 10 tonnes then think of the damage some that weigh 50 tonnes could do. And they are way way smaller than any of the ELE type ones.

The tin foil hat part of me wants to now invest in a portable mattress i can strap to my back!

And just in case you wondered, DA14 is tracking East to West, so if they are related then we are heading for one huge asteroid field! (wouldn't worry, a field that large would be spotted from Earth). Also, aside from differing directions, DA14 is due 12 hours later - again, if they were related then that would be an absolutely immense asteroid field (think of the distances involved).

So any further info, pictures, or video on where the meteorite ended up or above where it blew up??

Ps, I'm somewhat aware of how sonic booms work, but why were there so many, and like almost a minute or two after the meteorite was captured passing over the sky and exits the field of view..?

Wondering on the casualties. The governor has confirmed at least 500 casualties, of which 82 were kids, However, that figure has now been revised upwards of 950.

950? This is certainly one major incident.

Do you really think "they" would tell us if we were about to go through an asteroid debris field that could potentially cause damage all around the globe? (you dont have to answer)

No but Russian Military sources are saying they have found an impact crater with a diameter of 6 metres (around 20 feet). Big hole for a tiny meteorite. Certainly helps to concentrate minds on the threat from space though. I forecast months of weird and wacky ideas from the scientific grey beard community now on how to avoid similar tragedies.

I vote for a fold up, extendable giant tennis racket we can swat them away with.

Injuries, would be a better suited term to use, rather than casualties - As 'casualty' is often referred to as a death or great loss.

Where did you read that?
All I have read thus far was injuries, not casualties.

Injuries, not casualties.

One is people hurt, the other is people dead. No deaths reported that I've seen so far.

The meteor over the Urals was a fragment from asteroid 2012 DA14.

The fragment was ejected forward (hence got here first) after the successful mission on the 28th Jan to adjust 2012 DA14's Earth bound trajectory.

Further larger fragments that are following behind 2012 DA14 will hit the Pacific ocean and North American continent over the next 3 days. No major damage expected, so don't panic.
