I didn't see anything that would point to him being a mason aside from the Templar cross, which in itself isn't masonic. What lodge was he from?

I see no connection whatsoever. Please tell me what makes you think there is a Masonic link.

The Templar Cross is not proof positive, sorry.

Masonry is called the craft....templar cross....skull (but that is used other places).....

Did I mention Masonry is called the Craft and no one bothered to address that obvious point?

Very true, but so many other trades and organisations refer to being a, or the Craft.
I think there is nothing more to it, sorry.

Such as the group of soldiers in your original post. Carpenters describe their trade as a craft. Craftsmen learn a craft. Masonry is both a trade and a craft, depending whether you are speculative or not.

woodworking is a craft
brick and stone mason is a craft
jewelry making is a craft
baking/cooking is a craft
quilt making is a craft
needle point is a craft
many hobbies are called crafts (hence the need for arts and craft stores)

Do you think we have a monopoly on the word CRAFT ?

You are more than welcome . Narrowgate is somewhat correct , operative masonry is a trade , but when you do it well and take pride in your work such as my brother (who is not a Freemason) it is a CRAFT . Because it is just not a trade to him , but a source of pride , he is a true CRAFTSMAN .

I see no reason why him being a mason would be a bad thing. He was an exemplary soldier and very good at his "craft". He did a job not many want to do, but apparently needs to be done. Since I have not walked a mile in his boots, I cannot say how good a person he was, but so far, I see no reason to think he was a mason simply because he called his work craft.

I had not heard that he was a Mason. I don't know if "Craft" necessarily means "Freemasonry" in this instance, but I'd have to do more research. I know a few SOF who are Masons, but I'm not sure of the numbers. I know with many of the military units I worked with there wasn't that many Masons on the base. This may be due to the fact that my base was extremely small.

EDIT: Personally, I'd love to have counted him among one of my Masonic Brothers.

I can think of at least one spiritual path that calls it self the craft and is not Masonic.... British traditional Wicca....
