An inconvenient truth: More polar bears alive today than 40 years ago

Well, we all remember how people were freaking out over polar bears being trapped on tiny ice sheets sent adrift to float off into the sea and eventually die. And that all the climate change had screwed up their food sources yadda yadda. Well, Zac Unger decided he would go see for himself. He was surprised that things weren't as bad as he was led to believe.

There are around 25,000 polar bears currently, which is more than 40 years ago. Since they put a hunting ban on polar bears, the populations have grown significantly. So happily, I can say that polar bears aren't floating around on tiny ice sheets starving, they seem to be doing pretty good.

“There are far more polar bears alive today than there were 40 years ago,” Unger told NPR in an interview about his new book, “Never Look a Polar Bear in The Eye.” “There are about 25,000 polar bears alive today worldwide. In 1973, there was a global hunting ban. So once hunting was dramatically reduced, the population exploded.”

“This is not to say that global warming is not real or is not a problem for the polar bears,” Unger added. “But polar bear populations are large, and the truth is that we can’t look at it as a monolithic population that is all going one way or another.”

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, there are an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears worldwide, living in Canada, Greenland, the northern Russian coast, islands of the Norwegian coast, and the northwest Alaskan coast.

Polar bears became a focal point for environmentalists after former Vice President Al Gore featured them in his 2006 global warming documentary, “An Inconvenient Truth.” The bears were classified as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act to in May 2008 because their habitat was being threatened by global warming.

I've never believed in the whole 'global warming' thing.
The Earth goes through cycles just as every other living creature does.

We can't dismiss the fact that humans have an impact on the environment, but I believe they have blown the topic way out of proportion to fit an agenda.

According to official British Met office data collected over the last 16 years from 3,000 sites globally, global warning stopped 16 years ago.

Unfortunately, too many scientists have their careers tied in the global warming (and 'endangered' polar bears) bandwagon.

''Once hunting was Dramatically reduced ''.by what numbers ? Strangely enough the less male bears you have the more bears there are ,because male bears kill and eat cubs and will kill and eat female bears ,when they are hungry, since its hard to be omnivorous in the Arctic ,Environmentalists and animal rights nut groups are good at lying and falsfying figures, since as far they are concerned All wildlife is endangered or threatened will say any BS to further their paranoid Agendas

Be it man made or natural. If anyone denies that we're contributing to the total problem, then you deserve a world with nothing but steel and air conditioners.

May as well watch a drowning person in a pool and say "But it's normal to drown if you can't swim. He was going to drown. It's natural to die when you can't breathe the water."

For anybody to believe that global warming isn't real and humans aren't contributing to the problem need to further their research.

Agreed, humans have an impact on our environment, we've seen marginal temp increases, and a lot believe that it's due to solar cycles. But we also can't forget that politicians will use global warming as a way to push carbon taxes on certain countries, while places like china can just dump emissions like it's nobody's business.

Of course, it's easy to see especially for us, that there is some sort of "climate agenda".... Makes people money, great tax write off I'm sure. Not really my forte of corruption examining, to be honest.

All I have to say regarding there being more polar bears: Good. We shouldn't hunt them, because they are awesome.
Glad to hear they're making a comeback, 25,000 is a good start.
