Arthur Hames 86 years old...shot an employee of the the assisted living facility where he lives. He was very upset about the abuse; he says he felt bullied; and that this bulling had gone on for quite some time.

The man he shot at twice is alive was in the hospital and has been released.. Mr. Hames wanted to kill him and himself and is very unhappy he did not succeed.

I have heard about the abuse that happens in many of these assisted living facilities; someone finally snapped and had enough.

What is your opinion on this ATS?

WTF is happening? Everyday we are getting to see a new shooting incident.
Sounds like some sort of conspiracy.

Hard one to judge; some people in ALFs certainly are probably abused in one way or another; but with dementia (often sudden onset or worsening from a hidden stroke, etc.) anything can seem like abuse, even someone coming in to help you get dressed or take a shower, or not getting the food you want for a meal.

What I'm wondering is how in hell you punish an 86 year old for attempted murder. You gonna put him in jail? Hell, that's assisted living too, and maybe the food will be better.

Certainly abuse happens but just as certain is that many of these elderly people are suffering mentally and may perceive things that are not quite true.

Perhaps taking away his domino's was considered abuse.

A thourough investigation should definitely be conducted to uncover the truth of what happened.

they are just more publicized. I guarantee you that today hundreds of low income areas across the country had shootings like they have since the 70´s. They still dont make the press.....every one else does. They all happened "as usual". They will continue to as well no matter how much attention they get now for their obvious political capital.

He was probably on end, may going to die soon, felt that no one would listen if or if he reported the abuse no one did. Of course not excuse the action.

Perhaps the issue lies within the media reporting every story. The more reports people see the more conditioned to them unconsciously. Guess we don't know the full implications of that yet but may be seeing it.

Well at least it's a white person doing it to their own race! Carry on!

Wow, that's a lot of anger, my friend.

I've been avoiding the gun threads, are people really equating race with violence?

As to the OP....if he and the other residents were being abused, I would think a thorough investigation will uncover it. But we also have to consider his age, health issues, and medications (if any). In other words, don't assume the victim is a bully until we know all the facts.

After I heard about this story on the local TV news today; I was thinking the above too; and I guess just because he is 86; that does not exempt him from punishment by the law; attempted murder is attempted murder.

The MSM is pulling out the mentally ill card though.

What exactly happened to him...we don't know yet...and sometimes when people get older their perception of things can be confusing.

I was thinking that too; perhaps he is in his right mind and felt that no one would listen; unless he took extreme action. Still...what he did was wrong.

ANYONE who attempts to murder anyone else simply because they feel bullied is mentaly unstable.

Please provide me with and example where simple bullying justifies murder. Your pitiful logic might justify school shootings.

I am thinking that is what is going to happen; a thorough investigation. I hope the truth does come out.

I used to work as an EMT in florida, both on a private ambulance and in an Emergency room, When I worked on the ambulance, we'd regularly pick up patients for their dr visits or take them to the ER, the conditions they were in were DEPLORABLE, I'd come to pick up patients that were dirty, covered in their own urine and feces.
The staff, mainly CNA's and maybe one or 2 RNs assigned would be sitting around the nurses station either on the phone or texting away. I would refuse to take these patients until the nursing staff would clean them up. I got into more then one arguement with the staff about cleaning up the patients before I transported them.
I know elderly folk get incontinent, but this is stuff theyve been sitting in for HOURS, if not DAYS.
When I worked in the ER, first thing I'd do when i came on shift is go around and make sure those patients that came into the ER were cleaned and changed. You can tell most of these folk were mortified by their appearance and condition they were left in.
Damn, how can someone leave a person sitting in their own piss for hours??

These people are extremely underpaid considering what they must go through with some of the patients. They start those jobs wanting to make a difference in peoples lives and reality quickly gets the best of them. Much like politicians. I have visited some of these homes. It was not a heartwarming experience. I bought a large bunch of flowers for a patient for their room, they were stolen within hours. I am sure there are a lot of employees in nursing homes that care and do a great job. It is just not common unfortunately. I doubt if we will ever find out the truth and nothing but the truth in this case.

I have never said that "simple bulling justifies murder" I have stated what he did was wrong. Have you read through this thread?

No matter what his reasons were; what he did was wrong.

One thing is better staff management, in florida, most of these CNAs are welfare to work people, they have to work so the go this route so they have to do the minimal amount of work.
I can say this as fact, because one of the CNA's told me this herself, she was damn proud of bucking the system
