Associated Press
MIDLAND CITY, Ala.—Officers stormed an
underground bunker in Alabama where a 5-year-old
boy had been held hostage for nearly a week, rescuing
the child and leaving the boy's abductor dead,
officials said Monday.

Steve Richardson with the Federal Bureau of
Investigation's office in Mobile said at a news
conference Monday afternoon that negotiations had
deteriorated with 65-year-old Jimmy Lee Dykes. Mr.
Dykes had been seen with a gun, and officers believed
the boy was in imminent danger, Mr. Richardson said.

Officers stormed the bunker just after 3 p.m. CST to
rescue the child, who was taken to a hospital in
nearby Dothan. It wasn't immediately clear how Mr.
Dykes died.

I am glad the child is safe but good news? Nothing in this story is good news, get a grip..

I know! They said a lady Leo had set up a website to gather birthday cards for at least his parents, but now he will be home with them for his birthday!

The child is free from their kidnapper. That is very good news. Vet or not, those that would harm a child (and yes, kidnapping a child is harming them) get what they deserve.

S&F op, great news to hear.

As a parent, the kid coming out of the situation alive, is great news.

The guy was obviously very disturbed. Anyone who would storm onto a school bus with a gun and kidnap a child clearly has severe problems.

American Vet or not, what he did was horrible. He could have ended it himself by surrendering, and came away with his life, but, that unfortunately is not how it went down.

Wow. The child is safe and well.

This man killed a human being.

Whatever happened, we do not know yet, the child coming home is wonderful news.

He may well have killed himself. Whatever the outcome, he was deeply troubled.

Yesterday in your thread you were celebrating the criminal's death. So which is it? Because this guy was a vet he's entitled to kidnap a 5 year old?

Ah.. that's sad. I had a strong feeling when I read that he allowed the kid his medicine and was letting him watch t.v. that the guy had no intention of hurting the kid.

I feel bad for the old vet. Someone should have been helping him as he was obviously paranoid, and had he gotten treatment he would have never shot the bus driver (and wouldn't be in jail or dead) and the charges they had against him were not very big.

See the double standard...

I was celebrating a criminals death and my thread gets shut down and here
is the same thing except its a crazy white guy so who cares...

Not a whole lot of celebrating his death going on. Celebrating that the kid is alive? You bet.

Not having sympathy for a murder and a kidnapper who got killed because of his actions is a lot different than celebrating his death.

Quoted for truth. Its another fine example of the failures of the mental healthcare in this country. And I suspect we will see it propped up as such in the media.

That said, the minute he murdered someone and kidnapped a kid, i lost sympathy. Its sad that it got to taht point, and should never have, but that cannot justify the horrors that this man created.

No one deserves to die.
In this case it was either him or the child.
Im just glad the child is ok.

I am sure everyone is happy the child is alive. Here is something to consider. My boyfriend gets a lot of meds from the VA. He flushes what he doesn't use ( don't know why he doesn't take what's prescribed) I told him don't do that 'cause it goes into the water we drink. In retrospect, what the heck is up with people? We put all kinda crap down our drains. Dish soap, cleanser, toilet paper, poop, why the outcry over flushing meds? Is this the new age for mental disorders due to whatever we put down the drain? What the hell is in our drinking water we have so many nutters on the map these days? It doesn't matter where you live. Why is our drinking water recycled and this crap not removed?

Something's up......

I am happy the child is safe and going home to his parents. His upcoming 6th birthday will be one to beat them all, won't it?! Can you imagine that party!

Celebrate life.

I do feel for the man, as well. He had serious problems, the depth of which we can only assume from the limited information we have been given. But problems, indeed.

He murdered someone, and abducted a child. I am not passing judgement except to say he had no right, he broke laws. Regardless of the reasons, ir excuses. I am not celebrating his death, and anyone who thinks that is wrong.

We still so not know what happened. The story is incomplete.

The press conference will start in 5 minutes.

If the story is as told glad the child is safe and out of harms way. I just don't know what to make of that story. Seems something to do with preppers was involved and sorry, but the possibility of doing away with a vet, and somehow setting conspirators or preppers up, yet again, and hope to heck he's got good parents not any that are a part of a bigger plot against humanity. If the story is as told, good. His safety matters the most. Just don't trust news stories as they're reported. It's not good that anyone died however.
