I can understand that. It's all she had ever known.

It would be like being the only family on Earth, and having other humans come from another planet to visit you. If your family died and you were alone, I guess you would probably stay on Earth then go to a strange planet to live.

They probably killed the two that died of kidney faliure by giving them salt... (the only gift they would accept). Why couldn't they just leave them alone ?!

Very cool story. I chuckled at the title "..Unaware of World War II ", because I can probably quiz random people on the street, and they would be unaware of WW2

Wow! This is simply amazing! I can't imagine anyone surviving WW3 like that. Who would be brave enough to eat anything that isn't processed? I can't even imagine anyone would be able to behead a chicken and pluck the feathers let alone chase something for a whole day until it can't run anymore. Great article on what it means to live with nature and not against it.

Wow! They sure had it tough. Spending a few years in near starvation and eating thier shoes, berries and bark. Such a monotonous diet. Why did they keep going? I doubt that many people having grown up in today's entitlement nanny state would have the perseverance to survive. LikeI have said before, it will take a strong motivating force to do so, in my opinon only faith and family can be that strong.

Don't you know that our primary goal is to survive? The survival instinct is kicking in in situations like that. All the animals do this and humans are no exception. I can't say everybody would survive but almost everybody will try and be motivated doing so.

As another poster said, it would be pretty hard today to do something like that because of the technology. Especially in developped countries. I guess in Africa it's something that can be done. When you're missing after a cpl of day of research, autorities would simply say that you are dead in the jungle.

Peace out

Lol, you have such a good faith in human race!

Not everybody is born in a concrete city with only processed food to eat... Believe it or not, there are people in your country right now that hunt for their meat and pick their vegetables from their own garden.

I agree that this is a great article tough!

About WW2, that's a part i don't understand in this story. If they were gone for 40 years, that takes us in the sixties or seventies?

If they are unaware of WW2, this has no link with this story, maybe it was just uninformed people from the start?

Peace out

Petulance definitely doesn't mean what you think it means.

petulance
1. the condition or quality of being irritable, peevish, or impatient.
2. an irritable or peevish statement or action.

I don't think too many people have died from petulance. Certainly not these people.

It all depends on the context. Petulance goes hand-in-hand with intolerance or hatred. In that regard, petulance has perhaps killed millions.

I believe you are correct, that would put them in the 70's which is exactly when the settlement was discovered according to the date (1978) referenced in the third paragraph of this story. It just took someone up until now to write about it I guess.

You could be completely wrong yourself and the poster might actually know what these words mean and more. I am venturing a guess it was an auto correct typo while attempting to correctly spell "pestilence" and I am surprised that did not occur to you first. I mean ahead of second guessing the mans education. LOL

She will not leave. But we must leave her, seen through the eyes of Yerofei on the day of her father's funeral: I looked back to wave at Agafia. She was standing by the river break like a statue. She wasn't crying. She nodded: 'Go on, go on.' We went another kilometer and I looked back. What a story!

I walked across the snow covered lawn in bare feet once. I was surprised at how easy it was in comparison to my expectation (instant death from shock.
).

The importance of dreams.

Very strange story. I hope we hear more and more from places that have been cut off for political reasons up until now.

So amazing and inspirational.. I still find it odd that they survived 40 years then suddenly died when they were found... Something doesn't sit right with me

Yeah, that is quite weird. Poor people ;[

I wonder if their diet was better they would be in better shape. Maybe if they had planned more or occasionally put different kinds of food in their "natural freezer".

I didn't want the article to end, this is a great story! It sounds straight out of Tolken's imagination. More then half the people on earth would not be able to live like this for even a week, they would go insane.

Thank you for sharing!!!

These people were lead into the wilderness with little preperation by the father who was an "Old Ritualist". Old Ritualists were followers of an old set of Christian rituals of the Russian Orthodox Church. When the patriarch of the church attempted to bring the Russian rituals in line with the rituals of the Greek Orthodox Church. those who refused to adopt the new reforms, became known as the Old Ritualists or Old Believers.

These people were persecuted by the Tsars and other regimes for centuries prior to the persecution by the Bolsheviks. At times, whole communities would pick up and disappear into the forest.

So this old man, the father, wanting to hold onto ancient dogmatic principles and ritual that had been cause for tribulation for centuries, decided that rather than accepting newer ritual and find acceptance into the larger religious community, took his antiquated dogmatic belief and ran off into the forest with his family.

Moronic. Then, only through a unique and degrading set of circumstances, allowed his family to revert to a base level of human existence for decades of isolation.

I read up the thread that this is an example of the strength of faith and family, and human endurance. Several times I read people saying it exemplified humans living in tune with nature.

Hogwash. These people were not living in tune with nature. They were isolated in the wilderness, scrabbling out an almost prehistoric existence. There were no men for the daughters by which to have children. This is NOT living in tune with nature. This is ideological stubbornness.
