Hey ATS-ers
What a mad few weeks it's been on ATS. I experienced a high when my thread about the maybe time traveller Enoch Soames was a top topic (thanks all!!) at Christmas and then I experienced a severe low days later when I was banned for the first time for unknowingly breaching ATS T & C's.

Ban over and I used the time wisely to try and make sense of many streams of consciousness based on a small but wonderful article in the only magazine I have ever subscribed to (15 years and counting)... the quite wonderful FORTEAN TIMES

The article that blew my mind appears in the recent Fortean Times issue 297, page 21 in Robin (editor of Lobster) Ramsay's regular column 'Konspiracy Korner'.

This article has led me on a mad journey of discovery about facts and people and incidents and so much stuff I didn't know about which seems so relevant to stuff that's going on today with media manipulation and huge conspiracy theories that might or might not be true (examples: JFK, did NASA fake photographs, Dunblane, Port Arthur and most recently the ATS fave Sandy Hook)

Here's a quote from Robin Ramsay's opening paragraph in the 'Fortean Times' article.

Thomas Mahl's 'Desperate Deception' (1999), originally his PhD thesis, is the story of one of the great covert operations - or one of the the historically most significant conspiracies - ever mounted by the British state.

Strong words and I was hooked. And because the article isn't online as far as I can see I'll type out quotes from Fortean Times. He continues...

In 1939, top of the agenda for the British government was how to get America into the war against Hitler. While President Roosevelt and the East-coast anglophile elites who were running American foreign policy secretly wanted to join the war, the majority of the American population and its politicians were against getting embroiled again in another European conflict. How to overcome the isolationist opposition? The British secret state was invited to do it: and, with the assistance of the anglophiles, set up a propaganda and disinformation operation in the Rockefeller Center in New York under the guise of British Security Co-ordination or BSC.

Remember the acronym BSC.

The article then goes on to summarise the most explosive revelations in Thomas Mahl's book and to me was a real eye-opener. I couldn't find a reference to Thomas Mahl's book here on ATS. I did see quite a few threads about 'why did the USA go into WW2' and I must admit that I know very little about modern American history, I wish we (I'm in England) were taught modern history in school rather than the Normans and Vikings etc.

The only online piece I found related to Thomas Mahl's book is this engrossing article by By Dr. STEPHEN J. SNIEGOSKI:

The conquest of the United States by Britain... with a little help from her friends.

The American historical establishment never accepted the World War II revisionists' contention that the American people had been tricked into war by a duplicitous Franklin Roosevelt... According to the long-held establishment version of American entry into World War II, a reluctant U.S. government had been dragged into war by the force of circumstances — the belligerent actions of Germany and Japan. What Thomas Mahl's taboo-shattering book makes clear, however, is that the revisionist interpretation was not only much closer to the truth, but that it, in fact, did not go nearly far enough — failing as it did to recognize the extent to which British intelligence had orchestrated the interventionist effort. Moreover, the British played a critical role not only in bringing America into the war but also in inducing this country to emerge as a global superpower.

Wow! Us Brits made you Yanks a Superpower! You owe us! Not really... we're quits.
Here is the thinking behind that quite amazing deduction from Robin Ramsay's 'Fortean Times' article:

As WW2 came to a climax and the American political class contemplated demobilisation, civilianisation of the economy and a return to the mass unemployment which only the war economy had solved, an obvious solution presented itself: keep the war economy going: find a new 'enemy'.
And so the 'Red Menace' was fabricated.
The Soviet Union, devastated by German scorched earth tactics from the Ukraine to its Western border, with civilian losses of 20 million, was presented as poised to send its tank columns to the English Channel. Compared to the fabrication of the Cold War, fabricating intelligence about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction was small beer indeed.

Double Wow! The initiation of the so-called Cold War was a mass deception according to this.
Now lets go back to the BSC because this stuff gets madder and madder....

From Fortean Times:

BSC created a large number of front groups supporting American intervention, ran smear campaigns against the leading isolationist politicians and, with the co-operation of the Gallup polling organisation, produced fake polls showing support for intervention. It planted 100's of articles in sympathetic newspapers, seduced and blackmailed some of the leading isolationists and disrupted their political campaigns.

And this is from the Dr. Sniegoski article:

BSC made use of any means, legal or illegal, to fight those it deemed enemies of Britain, a classification that consisted mainly of non-interventionist Americans who wanted to keep the United States out of the war, rather than actual German agents. In essence, BSC sought to override the democratic will of the American people in the interests of the British government; and, most significantly, in this effort it was aided and abetted by the Roosevelt administration.

Please take a moment to read the whole article as I think it has some amazing information that I personally did not know about at all. I had never heard of BSC before. Nor had I heard of William S. Stephenson... so I typed him into Google and that's where more conspiracy theories concerning him emerged.

The most shocking conspiracy is that he was implicated in the murder of William Rhodes Davis who was the author of a peace plan to avoid war with Germany!

I want you, the reader, to understand how one simple story led to my mind being bedazzled with one conspiracy after another... all linked... and with disturbing overtones: ie: If 'they' could get away with this back then then just imagine what 'they' can get away with now!

I apologise for the next HUGE quote but I can only find this as an uncredited PDF, so not actually on a web page I can link to and I felt it was all very relevant.
Here is the url of the pdf:
acluleaks.com/uploads/Vol_1.pdf

There is no author credited so I'm posting this in good faith as it is a very good condensation of a very complicated topic and I can't summaries this any better....

Okay... so here is the big quote from an uncredited PDF

VOL 1: Cover Up of the murder of William Rhodes Davis One of the more enduring mysteries of WW II, the murder of oilman William Rhodes Davis, became a little less opaque with the recent release of FBI documents connecting the American Civil Liberties Union to the case. Some may argue that it cannot get any more convoluted. Davis’s death has been shrouded in mystery for seventy years now, but the cast of characters who killed him explains why. British secret agent, Intrepid, admitted killing Davis some 35 years after the fact, but how on earth is the premier civil liberties organization in the United States connected to this case? The ACLU is a 501c3 organization, a public charity, whose stated goal is preserving civil liberties. Intrepid, otherwise known as Sir William Stephenson, was the model for James Bond, secret Agent 007, and Commander Ian Fleming worked for him in the United States. William Rhodes Davis was, by many accounts, the largest single contributor to FDR’s reelection campaign in 1940, and was the author of a peace plan to avoid war with Germany. Vice President Henry Wallace thought enough of the peace plan that he mentioned it in his diary, and Davis actually met in the White House with FDR to discuss it. Oil man Davis would consummate pacts to deliver oil to Germany and Japan, thus infuriating the British. The British intelligence service was renting six floors in Rockefeller Center. Davis’ oil brokerage firm was also located in Rockefeller Center. Davis’s murder would occur in his office in Houston, Texas, and he would leave this earth James Bond style, being poisoned during lunch. In Intrepid’s retelling of the story, he does not appear particularly choked up about the loss of Davis. The reason given by most authors for the murder of Davis was to prevent him from shipping Mexican oil to Germany and Japan. The United States was a neutral country when Davis was murdered on August 1st, 1941. Pearl Harbor was just around the corner, and the reason given for Japan’s attack was FDR’s decision to cut off all US oil to Japan just one month before Davis’s murder. Japan had a very cordial relationship with Washington, and none of the Japanese diplomats, nor members of congress saw the cutoff of oil coming. Japan was not threatening US interests, but was certainly threatening Great Britain’s colonial interests in Asia.

So after reading that bombshell I did some Googling and it turns out that it is true that William S. Stephenson might well have been Ian Fleming's inspiration for James Bond!!! Triple Wow!

Check out this website page about 'Sir William Stephenson CC NC DFC'
The Intrepid Society

From the book Ian Fleming (by Rosenberg & Stewart): : " We do know that Fleming had been in Rockefeller Centre when William Stephenson's men entered the Japanese Consultate to copy the codebook there: in Casino Royale Fleming transforms that reality into an assassination in which James Bond ...”

William S. Stephenson died in 1989 and here is his obituary is the NYTimes:
William Stephenson, British Spy Known as Intrepid, Is Dead at 93

Reminiscing about his wartime service, Sir William said that in addition to serving as a link between Churchill and Roosevelt and supervising the training of Americans for intelligence work, he operated a spy network that uncovered the activities of Axis agents in South America and provided valuable information to Washington and London on the movements of Vichy French operatives. Knighted in 1946

Intrepid... now there's a spy name if there ever was. I can't find a thread about 'Intrepid' on ATS...there should be...because our man Bill appears in so many other threads on ATS as a cameo performer... you can do the search... and here is a selection of ATS threads featuring our man:

So I think this Will Stephenson is quite an individual who might well be one of the most influential people of the 20th century if one believes that the BSC persuaded Americans into going into WW2 and then persuaded Americans that Russia was a threat to continue the war effort and the war economy. Powerful stuff maybe. (The fact he was the inspiration for James Bond kind of pales into insignificance...)

I think I've only scratched the surface of what might me a very amazing story about William S. Stephenson. I hope this thread inspires more dedicated ATS-ers than me to properly link Bill to the myriad of secret operations he is rumoured to have had a hand in.

UPDATE: I just found this video about him where it alludes to the fact that he was behind the CIA... featuring Roald Dahl of all people! 'Tales of the Unexpected' indeed.

Now I'd like to end this thread with a brilliant quote from Robin Ramsay's closing paragraph in 'Fortean Times' issue 297

In 1967, in a briefing entitled 'Countering Criticism of the Warren Report', the CIA stated that "Conspiracy on the large scale often suggested would be impossible to conceal in the United States, esp. since informants could expect to receive large royalties, etc". This argument is a favorite of what we might call anti-conspiracy theorists, yet this vast covert political operation, which Mahl estimates involved 2,000 people remained secret until 1962 when bits of the story appeared in 'The Quiet Canadian', about the head of the BSC, William Stevenson (sic), who gave the book's author access to some of his papers.... This mind-boggling story was entirely concealed for 15 years. And its most startling features concealed for over 40. In a similar way, the Bletchley Park code-breaking story remained secret until 1970.

So these cases prove it is entirely possible that a massive conspiracy involving 1000's of people could well be covered up for generations.

I'll end on Robin Ramsay's last line... and I am in total agreement:

The CIA was wrong: large scale conspiracies can be kept secret for decades.

Well, clearly the one organization that most effectively manages large-scale conspiracies wouldn't want anyone to think that.

But here's the thing that always makes me shake my head. People (many of them right here on this very conspiracy site) often ask: "But with a conspiracy that big there would always be someone letting the cat out of the bag. Why are there no whistleblowers?"

The whistleblowers are everywhere. It's just that we don't listen to them. Or we don't believe them. Or we're incapable of separating the real information from the disinformation.

But, even when, as you point out, the principles actually involved start giving interviews and talking to journalists--no one except for a discerning few seem to notice. Informers are screaming their heads off all over the place--it's just that hardly anyone's listening....

Of course, this wouldn't be the first time that Britain dragged the US into a major war, it happened in the First World War too. With the sinking of RMS Lusitania (with the loss of American lives) by a German U-Boat, America were forced to act.

Some believe that it was an inside job, at worst, or was allowed to happen, at best.

Either way, it seems the world can't have a bloody good war without US involvement.

Although the people of the U.S. were isolationists...it was the attack upon Pearl Harbor by the Japanese that pulled the U.S. into WWII.

As far as why the U.S. became a Superpower. This is self evident as the U.S. had decided to never again have to get into another war like WWII without being prepared.

William S. Stephenson would probably make for a good topic in the research forum. In fact all of this info would.

I think a whole thread about William S. Stephenson would be a great thread as he seems to have been involved or implicated in numerous conspiracy ideas.
This was the annoying thing about all that I found out... I knew it would dilute the thread and also that I wouldn't have enough time to do all the info justice... but I thought it best to post this up as a starter.
Perhaps another ATS-er will get inspired with this info.
Thanks.

And I believe there are people suggesting that the USA were fore warned and let the attack happen... in good old false flag fashion.

See this thread:

Was Pearl Harbor allowed to happen?

I agree that the cold war was shrouded in propaganda and BS, but mostly from the neo-conservatives making the soviet union into something it wasn't. Adam Curtis is my source; he even interviews CIA employees, neo-cons and various others involved in the war in Afghanistan where America was funding freedom fighters to fight communism (which ended up with Osama Bin Laden being corrupted by another jihadist group, a group that believed that violence against civilians was acceptable as they were essentially agents of the material culture of the USA. Osam was great for them because he was rich).

The neo-conservatives were inspired by a man named Strauss who wrote about America's moral decay and ways to temper it; he proposed that if you could convince Americans they were in a fight against evil, or to align to a higher power that you could restore morality. Of course the culture is still as vapid as ever, but they set the path that led to 9/11. They defeated communism in their eyes though. Meanwhile the CIA and Russia were both saying communism had failed for internal reasons (poor productivity, goods, poor economy, rigid system).

The funniest part of it all is that the neo-cons convinced themselves that the soviet union was evil. Then they tried to justify those beliefs with a book called 'The terror network' which was filled with CIA black propaganda. The neo-cons didn't realize this, and the CIA couldn't convince them otherwise. The neo-cons basically pulled the Colin Powell trick (convinced everyone that Iraq had WMD's), they tried to show how dangerous communism was; inventing the idea that communism had cells all over the world much like the international terror threat of today.

They used fundamentalist christians to gain political power through the republican party. I can't cite names as I don't recall but Adam Curtis is awesome and I highly recommend all of his documentaries; this particular one is called "The Power of Nightmares".

I am well aware of the theories about the cracked code information as well as it has been said the warnings from the code breakers was purposely ignored.

This is HIGHLY UNLIKELY.

It is most likely an issue of the Higher Ups in the Military and U.S. Government did not take such threats seriously and as in any Chain of Command....there are F#@$ Up's.

The RISK involved with PURPOSELY ignoring such a possible threat is unlikely as we are not talking about a worse case scenario for doing so as a bit of damage....we are talking about the possibility of Japanese Forces directly attacking Hawwai and the U.S. West Coast!
