For the USA it looks like the smartphone you thought you owned can still get you in trouble if you tamper with it because your carrier says so.

I think every phone should have an option to be sold unlocked and let the carriers battle it out between themselves rather than paying the most to a particular vendor to secure handset

Something tells me that att&t push this #.

I paid for, I will unlock it and destroy it.

Soon there will be a law requiring users to give back their phones if they no longer contract with the carrier.

I always use pay and go phones. No one will tell me if I can't unlock my phone if I want to. Mine are always unlocked before I buy them anyway, same as my iPad as well....
