(Reuters) - Emelie Olsson is plagued by hallucinations and nightmares. When she wakes up, she's often paralyzed, unable to breathe properly or call for help. During the day she can barely stay awake, and often misses school or having fun with friends. She is only 14, but at times she has wondered if her life is worth living.

Emelie is one of around 800 children in Sweden and elsewhere in Europe who developed narcolepsy, an incurable sleep disorder, after being immunized with the Pandemrix H1N1 swine flu vaccine made by British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline in 2009.

Im surprised this thread hasn't had any attention. I just read this on yahoo and very alarming. luckly the pandemrix vaccine wasn't used in the US, could have been even worse. still researching more about the pandemrix vaccine and which adjuvent was used in it. will update with what I find

I did think the swine flu thing was a marketing campaign by Tamiflu and wasn't based on a real threat. But we shouldn't throw the baby out with the water and not vaccinate our kids for things like mumps, measles and so on. Those diseases have unfortunately made a comeback in recent years thanks to such conspiracy theories.

I feel for that poor girl, as my stepbrother has both narcolepsy and cataplexy...except he got his from anaesthesia after he tore his ACL during football.

What exactly is the substance in the vaccine that is linked to the condition?

800 out of millions does not really mean that the two are related when you look at the statistics on Narcolepsy. But people write stuff like "shots cause _____" for people who are easily fooled and wont take a critical look.

Yeah but what percentage of kids that get vaccinated end up getting whooping cough, THAT is the number you need to look at.

The chief medical officer at GSK's vaccines division, Norman Begg, says his firm views the issue extremely seriously and is "absolutely committed to getting to the bottom of this", but adds there is not yet enough data or evidence to suggest a causal link.

Yes, actually there is enough data to "suggest" a causal link. Maybe not prove it yet, but yes, suggest. As long as they can keep saying this EVERY single time, everyone believes them. It really doesn't matter how much evidence, correlation or studies that are done, they always say "not enough to suggest a causal link." Do they spend any time investigating this themselves? No, they spend their time trying to convince everyone there couldn't possibly EVER be a problem.

Only 800 cases with obvious results. What about long term, chronic results? If 800 people got narcolepsy, this suggest, as do many other observations, that vaccines SCREW with your neurological system. The H1N1 vaccine in Canada causes hundreds of people to display stroke like symptoms. Most of them may have gotten over these things, but why should I not question something that causes stroke like symptoms in someone?

And it makes no sense that measles mumps would come back "because of conspiracy theories" when everyone and his dog gets vaccinated for mumps and measles, including many of the children who came down with them.

Just purely on logic, I think the whole system needs to be questioned. But people want to continue believing that it works and has been responsible for eradicating these diseases - in my opinion, there is much evidence that this is not true. It needs to be seriously looked at. And one of my major contentions is that no one up there controlling these things is going to EVER take that serious look.

Any logically minded public or system would take all the present data and at least concede, "We need to understand vaccines more," but they don't!

S&F. Sick, how people see this sort of thing, just like the autism connections, and then believe when they are told it isn't true. There is nothing good about these vaccines! Never has been. Regular flu shots are something like 60% effective, so they say. I wonder, are the odds of getting the flu about 40%?

That is the very tiniest top of the iceberg. To have something definitely linked to a vaccine, the reaction must have been obvious and huge. Just think about all the people who have not been able to demonstrate the link, or are totally unaware of it being even a possibility.

We are not talking about 800 unlucky kids. We are talking about some unknown mechanism of action that has severely disabled 800 kids, and damaged god knows how many more.

I know firsthand just how debilitating and disabling narcolepsy can be. I was truly heartbroken to read that children are developing symptoms after flu shots. Not one person on this earth deserves this agonizing condition. It will change their lives in many ways.
