According to CCTV, the mural artist commissioned during the renovation of the ancient Wat Sampa Siw Temple eight years ago snuck in mugs of this famously blue feline simply because he "likes cats."
Other modern touches include video game-famed Angry Birds, a "Kung-Fu Panda" look-alike and an iPad were found hidden in the paintings. The additions have reportedly become an attraction in themselves and are brining in even more visitors.

“Inserting hidden messages into temple paintings is an age old tradition,” explained Rakkiat. “Years ago they would hide depictions of sex in the murals; nowadays it’s a blue cartoon robot cat.”
Ten years ago, a flood hit the temple and damaged some of its wall paintings. Monks here invited a painter to do the repair. But to their surprise.
Pladkantaphat Kittimetee, monk of Wat Sampa Siw, said, "We never knew the painter would add Doraemon to the wall painting. We learnt that from news reports and then saw that little creature ourselves. We thought it was lovely and didn’t want to remove it. Besides, it has attracted a lot of children and young people."
