I really enjoy Discovery/History Channel reality shows like Gold Rush, Pawn Stars, Alaska, etc. So it was with great enthusiasm I set my Dish timer to start recording episodes of Amish Mafia a couple of weeks ago. But half way through the first episode I went to bed. The next week my son was watching the second episode so I suffered through it laughing at the phoniness of it all. In these two episodes alone we have what appear to be 2 or 3 punk kids running a sophisticated Italian syndicate-like operation among the PA Amish community. Cash payments to protect businesses, money for widows/helpless, destruction of competitors, physical force against drug use and adultery. They even run fixed boxing fights. I was like, come on, this is too ridiculous to believe even a fraction of it. Surely the real Amish community would publicly cry fowl. But then I thought, what a perfect hoax. The real Amish won't even see the episodes, they don't watch TV.

Have a happy new year.

"reality tv" is fake so this show i knew it was fake after watching the commercial for the first time. If its too good to be true, its probably fake.

Well, with all of the BS crap they put on TV, I didn't really mind this amish mafia show honestly, It's definitely better than the the yearly re runs that usually come on.

I like Ax Men, swamp loggers (when its on), and I'm starting to like that Bamazon show.

I think probably all of the reality shows are fake to some degree. A lot is scripted, rehearsed and shot over and over. But like Pawn Stars, it is a real store, doing real business, they are just fake how they present it. Same probably goes for the others. But this Amish Mafia show, totally bogus. Doesn't exist. It is all made up in my opinion. If not, then I'm sure the US Attorney would have an easy time indicting Levi and his little pigs with the film they have shooting holes in cars, smashing buggies, and getting physical with undesirables.

The show is an exaggeration of Amish influence in Lancaster County. The Amish absolutely control construction and land values in this area. Also, they control the issuance of liquor licenses but they do that by buying up all the available ones and holding them.

ax men and swamp loggers are awesome! My family use to work with bobby goodman when I was younger and living in jacksonville, NC he is a good guy.

that bamazon is a good show I suppose so far but the people on there are bigger idiots then on gold rush alaska.. its funny how people just think they are going to go somewhere they have went to before and do something very hard that they have never done and its just going to be a piece of cake.. Gold mining is super hard you dont just go gold mining like its no big thing...

at least finally gold rush alaska might actually walk away with some gold but since they have so much investment now who knows if they will actually make any more money then working a regular job and being at home with their family. I am glad they got rid of harness he was a waste of space doing nothing with his "back troubles" what the point of having people there that are important but cant work...

Not really sure how axe men couldn't be real they just show guys cutting down trees adn how dangerous it is which is true and the crazy things that happen on a daily basis while working which is pretty normal stuff for them but to most people is pretty hardcore and dangerous. Most people don't get how hard and dangerous some of these jobs are like the guys who do the crabbing or fishing in deep sea and alaska.. Also I can tell you that everything you see on swamp loggers is real with goodson logging I know them personally or atleast did a long time ago when they were a smaller company and from what I can see nothing on there is fake and basically the same thing it just follows them from job t job and all that goes along with logging nothing out of the ordinary if you have been around it before.

But most shows are fake in some way or they add in a bunch of fake drama, there is no way half these people could work together and get anything done if there was really that much drama going on every day.

I know, right?! I can't understand all this bs going around. At the very least they could've hammed it up better and made a comedy instead. But this show is just stupid and totally fake.

Buddy you are talking to a logger of thirty years experience. From faller to contractor and machine operator.
The crap they show is ALL dramatised way out of proportion...the stupidity and gullibility of the audience is their stock in trade.

I like watching Amish Mafia for the sheer bizzaro spectical of of it

I could never accept it as real. But, it's still entertaining to see how far this farce plays out:lol

The loggers are fake for sure. How could men doing that for a living be so completely idiotic and oblivious to safety precautions? But, there wouldn't be any drama if they weren't constantly doing dumb stuff that put them in harms way. Pawn stars is really fake and staged, but at least it's interesting.

So there IS an Amish mob. What a bunch of ***holes.

Actually, the mob provides what is in demand, so they're different.

You don't know much about the Amish community if you think they never see tv, will never watch it, or think things like this doesn't happen.

Yes, the show is a joke.

but, they are PA amish. PA amish are a lot more liberal than other Amish communities. They embrace the outside more and use technology. They are more like the mennonites than Amish.

Each community has its own standards of what is acceptable. Now if they tried to day these guys were Dakota amish, then it would be less believeable.

Many of the Amish can't "OWN" technology. But they can use it. They find ways around it. They know what goes on in the outside world, just as much as you and I do.

They're like the Jews. They circumvent their rules the same way the Hasidics circumvent the Sabbath with gadgets that have push-buttons.

Speaking of fake reality shows: does anyone believe that a bunch of moonshiners would let a camera crew film what they do? And that the same camera crew films law enforcement trying to catch moonshiners?

Don't miss A&E's new reality show, Meth Lab! The show that follows the zany shenanigans of Cletus X and his wacky family as they try to eke out a meager living in Cornfield County. In the premier episode, Cletus is upset that his daughter, Dorothy Mae, has taken a shine to Sheriff Pusser's boy, Wilroy. Cletus feels that Wilroy's criminal record would tarnish the family name, even though Wilroy is already Dorothy Mae's cousin. Meanwhile, meth production is down as the family takes time to celebrate Groundhog Day. (The movie, not the day.)

Right.
But there are still some very strict communities. the Pennsylvania Amish have already realized that the world is getting too small and there is no sense trying to pretend you don't have to interact with it.

The teen girls will go work as nannies and mother's helpers in English homes, the boys will do contracting work in the winter. So they are very much exposed.

They are supposed to make the best mother's helpers ever. I wish I lived closer to an pennsylvania Amish community.

This show actually points out how the leaders of the more strict sects are. They are willing to resort to rule breaking so they can continue to rule with an iron thumb.

Probably about 80% of the youth in Amish communities want to leave, but don't want to be shunned. That is how restrictive those communities are getting.
