In reality the world did end and all it took was a little water. Just because you didn't notice or refused to accept the truth doesn't make it any less true. The world was indeed flooded, sank beneath the waters. Truth be told the wicked witch didn't actually know that water could kill her, she'd never even seen a glass of crystal clear water before.
